Cheapskate's guide to cartridge selection

So you spent a lot of money on a rifle but you save on ammo. Only half a cheapskate then. Keep on rockin!
Im not a cheapskate im an ethical hunter who respects the animals I hunt. There is nothing wrong with wanting peak performance out of your rifle ammo and yourself I save on match grade ammo and i find what my rifle likes. From the powder burn rate to the powder charge weight to the best bullet seating depth My rifles are built exactly how I want them in every detail. A rifle is a very personal tool thats for the rest of your life. Its the same as anything else in life With a factory rifle and factory ammo your not in control your limited in what you and your rifle are capable of

You should get out and hike a bit instead of plinking critters off your tailgate. It's more fun.
Ever been chukar hunting?? Pheasant hunting is just flat land walking. Chukar hunting is steep rocky demanding challenging and often times dangerous I wore off the tread on my Kennetrek Mountain Extreme boots twice because the ground was covered in rocks. Its the most demanding and challenging bird hunting on the planet. So im sure ive done more hiking than……..

I just have to point out its illegal to shoot, or have a loaded firearm on a vehicle in Nevada.

Not quite ethical, because its illegal.

But, carry on.

As far as the reloading question,

Ive been reloading for about 25 years.

Pretty compact set up I have. I've bought in bulk, and I've bought in lesser quantities.

I've bought quite a bit of .223 ammo for my AR's in the same time frame, and I don't reloading 9mm.

I don't know that I've save any money.

I buy ammo or components when I want to shoot, and I don't worry about it.

Hard to be a cheapskate and shoot much, reloaded or factory ammo.

For me its about this……………. 5 @ .159. Shooting off the tailgate of my truck. Front bipod rear bag that i carry in the field. Im not a long range shooter my longest shot was 376 yards. But my rifle is

Hey wild Bill. I just ran the numbers. The cheapest factory 17 Remington ammo i could find was $2.50 each. With components purchased today for my 17 Remington cost to reload 67 cents. Huge savings. Add to that much better ammunition

My point is exactly what I said.

When I want or need ammo or components, I buy what I need and don't worry about it.

And, its hard to be a cheapskate and shoot much.

I didn’t think it was a difficult statement to understand.

I don’t drink, BTW.

Im sorry i misunderstood you. I just got off the phone with Nevada Game warden out of Fallon. I asked about shooting off my tailgate. He read me the law and said I was good to go “No violation “

Unless you are talking about being on private property, which "out in the desert" (quote from your post above) doesn't seem to be for me, you are in violation of the law.

Not sure who you talked to, but here's the actually law. If the public can be there, its illegal to have a loaded long gun on a vehicle.

Good luck with that if you ever get the ticket. Because you get to sit in a hunter safety class, and one of the instructors has to sign off on the violation. I know this because I am an instructor.

And the loaded gun on or in a vehcile issue is the biggest safety factor we hammer into students' heads the whole class.

Good luck. Screenshot_20251125_142945_Chrome.jpgScreenshot_20251125_142813_Samsung Notes.jpg

I reload because I enjoy reloading and shooting as a hobby. If I was being practical, I could sell all of it and my other rifles, buy a lifetime supply of .270 130 grain Winchester power points and just shoot, and I would sacrifice zero capability when it comes to killing elk, deer, or anything else.

You might call back the game warden and ask him about that NRS.
He red the NRC twice and said i was legal. I was ok since i wasn’t in the vehicle i was sitting in a chair next to the vehicle. He said if you were laying in the bed of your truck it would be different. So instead of arguing with me call him and tell him he doesn’t know what he is talking about since your a safety instructor and he’s only a Game Warden In fact i will get his name and you can talk to him. How about that.

The trouble with your hunter safety it doesn’t go far enough not even close. I worked at the shooting range off of Pyramid Hyw. 30% of the people with a hunting license had no business being in the field. Anyone who receives a hunting license should be able to demonstrate a high level of marksmanship with the weapon they choose to hunt with. If they cant they have no business hunting

Im a varmint hunter my kill zone is way smaller than on a big game animal

Well, good luck.

Hopefully you don't get a ticket.

I know what the law says and I know what I'm comfortable with.

As far as hunter safety and "high level of proficiency " good luck with that as well.

I'm out.
