Cementum aged critters - Let’s see them..

At age 1.5 the front two (I1s) permanent incisors are in, and noticeably bigger than the others. At age 2.5 the I2s (next to the I1s) are permanent and larger. At age 3.5 the I3s (next to I2s) are permanent and large. At age 4.5 the last set of incisors, technically canines I think, are now permanent. After age 4.5 it becomes guesswork.

Here's a pic of the incisors from a pronghorn that is 3.5. The I4s/canines (circled) are noticeably smaller than the others.

I’ve got a couple pronghorn jaws I’m going to take a look at and see if this lines up, thanks for the info

Montana Grizzly Bear one shot with a 25-35 ended his 6 year career...

Sure would think there would be more mass for a 5 year old buck, long tines though.
Tooth wear on the jaw matched up with other bucks from the area of the same age, interesting data point for sure. He was just the Muggsy Bogues of the buck world.

Don't think they got that one right.....
I would tend to agree, except I think there is another good Shiras moose on here somewhere that was also aged as 3? My friend shot a big one similar to Kurt's above a few years back and it was 4 so I am wondering maybe they get big sooner than we would think/expect?

I think it's well documented that basically any antlered big game animal (and pronghorn) can get big sooner than anyone would expect.

I don’t have any elk that I would consider big until there 5 and I have sent in quite a collection of elk. WR archery was 6. I will get to those some day on this thread. I would assume moose are similar? 3 would be damn young to be that big for a moose imo but I have sent in zero moose and have zero moose jaws so maybe I guess

I wonder if a dataset exists of aged animals vs score for different species. Maybe one could be compiled.
