So I have been collecting parts kits and gun projects for awhile and really need to do something with them.

Calibers we have already

17 remington
223
6x45
22-250
243
6mm remington
300 savage
300 blackout
30-06
7mm rem mag

First up a 1903A3 springfield drill rifle. I have removed the barrel and cleaned up the action. I have a new bolt for it. I was always going to put it back to military configuration but I picked up a nice example at the CMP South store. So I want to do something with the action. I hunt with a Ruger 7mm Mag my grandpa bought when I was 14 it's my main rifle. My son has laid claim to the ruger american 243. I don't "need" any other rifles I have plenty of varmint and predator stuff but a smaller caliber for antelope and deer wouldn't bug me. I have thought about either a 6mm remington or a 25-06 or even a 6.5x55. But, I have also always wanted a 35 whelen so I wouldn't be mad at that either.

Next up is a Czech 98 mauser. the last 4 inches of barrel are pretty rough. It was sold as a parts gun. I have a spare bolt and it is my sons gun. He has the ruger 243 and a Browning 30-06. Do I put it back together and shoot it? He has a really nice stock that needs to be finished for it if he wanted to build a rifle. I know barrels are pretty easy to find for the mauser. What would be a good option on this action? 358 winchester? Back to original?

Then I have a couple PPS kits I need to finish in 9mm And a Cetme C and a G3 kit but that is all pretty straight forward. I know putting barrels and stocks on the old actions wont make monetary since but I wouldn't mind putting them to use. Also how hard is it to put a barrel on?

My son happens to have both rifles (Springfield and German Mauser) in my house in 30-06 and 8x57. Both are strong actions. I’d pick a 7mm+ caliber. 35 Whelan is a good choice. 338-06 or something similar?

Both are standard length actions. Both will do what you want in any standard cartridge you choose.

I have a 98 in 35 Whelen. The Springfield is a direct knockoff of the 98.

I think a 35 Whelen in the Springfield, so long as the receiver checks out from a smith (parade rifles make me nervous).

The 8mm Mauser cartridge is a fantastic game round. You could keep the Mauser in 8mm and get a new bbl for it.

By "standard length" do you mean a long action?
Aka 30-06 length?

The Mauser might be what is called an intermediate length.
Made for the Mauser's 57mm case length. Verses the 64mm case length of the 30-06.

@sigpros,
As you mentioned, barrels for Mausers are fairly easy to get.
Bullets for 8mm not so much.

I built a large ring Mauser for my daughter in 7X57 Mauser.
She's using the 120gr NBT to good success.

You can get on Hoosier Gun Works sight to find out what Mauser action it is for ordering your barrel.

Yes, standard. The Mauser action (depending on the maker & style) will accommodate a 64mm cartridge just fine. I've yet to have an issue finding even .318 (8mmj) pills. Plenty of makers out there for the handloader.

The 7mm Mauser is a fine cartridge, the mother of all performance rounds and dead sexy to boot.

A 30-06 or 280AI in the Springfield would be wonderful as would a 6mm Remington.

In the Mauser a 6mm Remington, 25-06, or 7x57 Mauser would be my picks.
