Blending powders

As far as Weatherby blending powders, I used to have a Weatherby catalogue that listed their load data in it. I got it around 1985 or so. If I remember correctly, everything was loaded using Norma MRP powder. It listed the actual grain weight of the powder in each of the factory loads, and exclusive use of Federal 215 Primers in their large rifle cases. I lost that catalogue in Katrina along with everything else. I wish I could find another one.

Layered? How could you mange maintaining the layers? I guess if the loads were compressed the powder wouldn’t shift when the case was tipped.

It’s a muzzleloader, so you pour one powder in, pour the next powder on top of that, firmly seat a bullet on the charge, then shoot it. I don’t see that working as well in a cartridge, even if it was compressed.

Next time you’re at a public range, just remember that guy next to you might have been reading about DIY duplex loads and is trying them out for the first time.

Kentucky Ballistics was shooting a .50 BMG SLAP round from a glorified zip gun. Lucky that he lived to tell the story.

Kentucky Ballistics was shooting a .50 BMG SLAP round from a glorified zip gun. Lucky that he lived to tell the story.

So just read a really interesting article in Field Ethos on blending powders. The article describes a Safari in which one of the hunters is from California using blended powder mix to hunt plains animals. The usual discussion each evening on animals taken until it became the "blended" hunter's turn. Seems he missed absolute giant of an Eland well over 60"!!! He blamed the PH for poor yardage call. Hmmm, 130 meters, what could have gone wrong?

Well it seems the Cali hunter just lost his hunting pal and decided to take him to Africa on Safari with him. C'mon guesses?

Yes he did! His loads were carefully loaded with favorite load with 3 grains of his buddy's cremation ashes on top like cake icing!

His shot was bit low according to PH. A grave digger shot. I dunno, maybe his friend was PO'ed he couldn't go?

Geesh! 3 grains is committing. Think id try 0.5 and still have the sentimental value.

I'm pretty sure the short range benchrest guys do some powder blending. They don't talk about it but they do it.

Maybe he should have sighted his rifle in with this interesting concoction.

Funny enough, I have a baggie of old powder from a bunch of unknown loads that I didn't want to shoot, but wanted the brass.

Guaranteed, if I was stupid enough to try it, it would be the best shooting powder I ever tried. But have absolutely 0 clue what's in there and could never replicate it again.

This is for Trojan fishing lures.

First, I am not advocating this, nor do I ever plan on doing it. I read on another site a handloader claiming gains in efficiency by blending. Can't post the link but will via PM. I hope a guy from Eastern Montana with a shit ton of loading and shooting experience will respond. Doesn't seem like a good idea. mtmuley

I had a PH in South Africa that blended (or layered) powders in his 7mm RM, but I've never tried it, or know anyone that has done it.

I once emptied the powder in my powder thrower into the wrong powder can and ended up with some very expensive lawn fertilizer.

Had the passing thought of doing that with some of my dad's ashes and killing something with his 1937 Model 70 '06, haven't pursued that idea.

Pretty sure Hunter S. Thompson had Johnny Depp shoot his ashes out of a cannon. Which... checks out pretty hard if you've read much of his writing.
