Everyone has their own comfort level. I feel OnX and hunting YouTube really advanced at about the same time, creating the perfect storm.OnX was the real game changer for me. If you didn’t grow up in an area or live there a long time, it was very intimidating. Mapping apps takes a lot of that stress out of it. Also takes a lot of advantage away from those who knew how to go get, read and navigate by county, BLM and FS maps. Basically opened things up to the masses.
I moved to MT in the early
2000’s and my favorite thing was going into unfamiliar territory solo with a paper USFS map.
I think whatever the argument is, it’s all easier for new folks to figure out these days.
