Barking coyote and the mountain lion

I was hunting Saturday when I heard a coyote barking continuously like a dog. That was a first for me. After about five minutes of listening to it I made my way toward the noise and saw a little movement. I raised my binoculars expecting the coyote, but instead saw a mountain lion feeding on something gray like a rabbit or grouse. It was behind a log so I couldn't see it very well. I tried to sneak up on the lion, but it detected me and bolted. Once I got down to the spot where the lion was I could see the coyote across the ravine barking up a storm. It quit shortly thereafter, probably because I chased the lion away.

Interestingly enough, the lion tracks just disappeared. I don't know if it jumped into a tree or what, but I could not find where it landed.

That's cool. I am always amazed at lions. I've only seen them a handful of times in the wild.

Cool encounter. I’ve heard it a couple of times, most memorably when I was waiting for some antelope to feed over a hill and two yotes started barking at me about 200 yards away. The antelope immediately perked up and puffed their white ass hair out and promptly walked the other way.
At the time I was frustrated, but looking back, I think it added to my growing admiration of the ability wild animals have to coexist and communicate (albeit inadvertently) in a universal language, regardless of their specific relationship to each other.

Maybe the lion was eating the coyotes buddy.
That's quite possible. I couldn't see what it was, only that it had some gray on it. When I went to where it was I expected a deer, but there wasn't even blood or fur. They are stealthly.

Im glad you posted this. Saw the same thing on a javelina hunt a few years ago. Everyone thought I was nuts.
