Barbary Sheep Hunt

I got lucky this year and drew a barbary sheep tag with a long time hunting partner. Finding out results back in April made for a long wait before we were actually going to be chasing a sheep for the first time our lives. Long story short, two flat tires on the trailer, getting stuck in the mud, broke down four wheeler, private property issues and killing two sheep within 5 feet of each other was priceless.

Congrats on a great adventure! I'm heading to Big Bend area of TX in Jan 2021 with 3 guys from work for the same.

Very cool. Congrats! I’m guessing New Mexico? I would like to do this hunt some time on public land as it’s as close as one can expect to go sheep hunting in North America for the most part.

@Baerman, how's the meat? I've had a friend shoot an auodad here in Texas before, but I never got to try any of it.
I cut up the meat last night and it was tough as nails! I've never seen thicker silver skin on any other game meat before...including mountain goat. It also smelled a little gamey. I've heard so many say it tastes bad or is just tough. So rather than risk not liking it and wasting any meat, i'm taking to the processor to get a bunch of salami and pepperoni made up.

Those are great rams. I did the public land hunt in a different unit last February and it was really fun.

I've eaten several Aoudad and the big rams can be a challenge to get tasty. The more tender cuts like backstraps, I cut it into medallions and marinated them for a couple of days. That helped alot. The rest, I had made into smoked sausage mixed with young wild pork. Still a little bit gamey but folks still seemed to like it. The sausage was really good in gumbo.

Yes, New Mexico. It was a quick hunt but a memorable one in getting there.
Were you guided or DIY? I was gifted a NM Barbary sheep hunt and have this week to get it done. Having never hunted them before, I’m quite a bit behind the power curve!

hunted free range aoudad a few years ago with abqbw in west Texas. That was a BLAST.

we ended up killing two that fell within a few feet of each other. one at long range and the other at 30 or so yards.
Challenging critters for sure.

your awesome recap brings back great memories of super cool Davis Mountains country...

Now I need to draw in NM...
