Formed in 1967 in Los Angeles with just three powerhouse vocalists, Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells. The three met through the Los Angeles music scene, crossing paths at recording sessions, studios, and gigs where their talents caught each other’s attention. They decided to form a band because they wanted to create a vocal-driven rock group with harmonies unlike anything else at the time. They quickly added a backing band and became one of the biggest acts of the late ’60s and ’70s, scoring 21 Top 40 hits, including three #1s.The name? Supposedly inspired by Aboriginal Australians who slept with dogs to stay warm on freezing nights, one dog for cold, two for colder, three for freezing. Some say it was actually suggested by arranger Van Dyke Parks, but either way, it stuck.Based in LA, they recorded hits like "Joy to the World," "Mama Told Me Not to Come," and "One", often bringing songs by other writers to mainstream audiences. Despite all their success, they never won a Grammy.Even with lineup changes, legal battles, and personal struggles, their music still rocks stages today, keeping the classic hits alive for new generations.Awww...
