Bad shot - good ending

Congratulations from a fellow Missouri guy on a very cool buck! You absolutely did the right thing by backing out over night. Very fortunate that coyotes didn't get him.

That’s awesome man! Love the weird looking claw at the end of his beam. Very smart backing out lack you did. I’m glad coyotes didn’t end up on him before you were able to recover him

Very cool antlers!! I think it’s funny how a lot of people claim that ‘the meat’s great’ after they leave a gut shot animal overnight LOL. Every animal that I’ve ever tried eating after it spent the night with the guts marinating inside has tasted just like it smelled…like poop, bad farts etc. That meat might not make you sick but if it forever ruins venison for a friend or family member with a sensitive palate, wouldn’t it be better to just leave it in the woods for the scavengers to enjoy?
Scavengers gotta eat too!

Don’t agree. If it’s plenty cold I think there is a good chance the meat is just fine. I think it’s our responsibility as hunters to at least try the meat and if it’s a little stinky turn it into sausage or something! I think it’s a dumb idea to just assume it’s bad and ‘let the scavengers eat’!!?

Congrats on a great deer @Lostinthewoods!

I guess my first question would be why would I lie? I’m already being vulnerable and saying I made a shitty shot. So it’s not like I need to save face by saying the meat is good.

Whats interesting is it’s not just you. I texted about 10 friends about the situation and mentioned I hope the meat was still good.

Half thought I was insane that I planned to eat gunshot deer meat and the other half it didn’t even phase them.

I will say that maybe there’s a difference in season times. Shooting one early September and leaving it over night verse January definitely have different temps and conditions.

The only thing I didn’t mess with was the inner tenderloins.

Rear hams had no smell, discoloration, or oddities.

No bone rot either when I cut into the front and rear quarters either.

Who knows, maybe some of yall have had different experiences, but the meat I took was no different than other kills.

But thanks though, he did have super cool antlers. I’m still driving around with them in my truck and all excited about them!
