I am currently building points in Arizona for a Bull Elk hunt with a rifle.

After purchasing an additional point in February 2026, I will have (3) points.

Based on my research, I believe I will need (6) points in order to have a realistic chance at drawing a non-resident rifle tag (looking at unit 5A and unit 23).

Does anyone have experience with either of these areas, or experience with any Outfitters in these areas?

Feel free to message me if you do not feel comfortable sharing.

Thanks in advance!

lol, your math may be a bit off. 3 points will not get you a rifle tag unless you draw in the random. You don’t have enough for a late archery with 3 except in the random.

Thank you for this...I really appreciate it!

Looks like I need to do more research.

Years ago I started building points for a mid/low-tier archery hunt I really wanted to do. It could be drawn with 6 points. I now have 15 points and last year it took 20 points to draw. I was in my 20s when I bought that first point. I’m now in my 40s and I’ve gained on it by 1 point. Obviously I’m bailing on those dreams. Keep in mind that what a hunt takes to draw changes over time, and rarely gets better.

If you didn’t draw with 15 points on a low/mid tier archery unit, then it’s not a low/mid tier unit, IMO.
It was most certainly a low/mid tier unit when I started purchasing points. I think there were only 3-4 units that took less than it. It moved up the ranks to mid-tier now, it seems.

The point is, have realistic expectations. If a unit takes 6 points to draw now, someone better be willing to invest at least twice that in money and time before they draw. Of course, you could always luck out on the random side of things.

Ha….okay. Just saying the true low/mid tier units are still low/mid tier units that can be drawn with less than 15 points. Chances are they were never a true low-mid tier unit, at least as for as archery units.
