I want to make sure I’m doing it right because it feels strange… I have 7 points for elk and “should” draw the tag I want. Even though I’m confident should I put it as my 2nd choice? So 1st choice be a more difficult tag to draw? I’ve been planning on putting the tag I plan to draw as my first choice but started to second guess it. I understand there’s a bonus point pass first and random pass second…. I may have just answered my question but would love some feedback.

If you have the points for your second choice, you'll pull in the first pass and won't be considered for the random on 1st choice. Basically, it doesn't matter if you put it first or second if you have the points for it.

I would, but it comes down to your random number, and how confident you are. You might get lucky, pull a good number, and get a better hunt on the 1st choice.

If point creep ends up putting you below 100% odds for the tag you “should” be able to draw, then you will want to have that crazy moonshot choice in your first choice slot for the second pass.

Basically, it doesn’t hurt you at all to put a dream tag in choice 1 and the tag you “should” draw in choice 2. If you are one of the people with enough preference points to draw that choice 2 tag, you will still draw it in the first pass.

What this guy said. Glory tag 1st then the guarantee 2nd

This is extremely lucky and amazing. I’ve not drawn even a good random tag since 2013. Have hunted, but all in preference based systems.
1 was bonus pass with 27 points second choice elk archery last year - no luck there. Random antelope draws with 0 points and 18 points 1997 and 2020. Strip rifle mule deer with 10 points in 2005 - random. You have to gamble to win.

Oh I’ve gambled plenty. Still have a combined 300+ points saved up. Just been stoned when it comes to all random based draws for last 13 years. Statistically almost impossible to be this bad.

I'm this bad. I've drawn a few doe antelope in WY but no other random tags in WY, MT, NM, UT, AZ, ID, ME, NH, VT, PA or any raffles. A couple of times I have even been the odd man out at my pref point level in Colorado. If not for the Colorado leftover list and 2nd/3rd choice tags, I'd have hunted much less there too! WY has been fairly good to me with points, and Colorado somewhat as well. But I have amassed a lot of points in a lot of states, just not enough to count on in any given year unless I were to just blow them on hunts I probably could have drawn years ago. Don't feel bad, I can hunt somewhere every year. But it's funny how my best-laid plans have not matched up with my reality. And hearing that people have drawn multiple random AZ or NM or UT tags is just full on crazy.
