Do any of you have a mental checklist you go through when setting up for a bull that seems to be coming in? Any general rules of thumb for where you like to position the caller if you have a partner?

Wind currents, background behind me for cover, shooting lanes. When you set up if you have time clear any leaves or sticks from under your feet. Even the smallest crunch of leaves will turn them around.

Know what the wind is doing, check your background for cover and have shooting lanes. They almost never come in from where you think they will.
If you have time clear the ground under your feet, the smallest crunch of sticks or leaves will turn a bull around.

# 1, Yes draw back sooner when possible, # 2 do not be concerned about an elk seeing you if you haven't drawn yet. They will not spook like a Whitetail if you do not move! Elk do not recognize the human figure on its own. Stay still & patient & they will calm down. Don't make time a factor.

100% disagree on elk coming in downwind under normal situations, it's suspicion that causes this, remove this from the equation & elk will come in the shortest route. You must be believeable in sounds used & a great setup. Elk are best called in downhill from your setup when possible, other angles work too but elk above you rules in the hunters advantage!
