Archery Bighorn Hunt in Southern Colorado

Awesome write ups so far. Looking forward to more.
Good luck with the tag. Seems like you're doing the tag justice with the diligent scouting.

Got one last scouting trip in on Saturday. I was able to find the sheep relatively quickly, right around 5:30a-6a. There was 21 total, the normal dinker rams I’ve seen in that group as well as the bigger legal ram. With the light and the distance they were at I couldn’t tell if the second legal ram we’ve been seeing up top was with them. Sure could have been with how much darker he was in comparison to the others (could for sure make out the one other legal ram in the group). They were headed to the north side of the mountain, I contemplated hiking up above them to see if I could drop in on them but it didn’t make much sense to me to even attempt any pressure with the season being under a week away.
I stuck to my original plan of heading south to hike down and check out some ridges at some lower elevation where I’ve been hearing the few big, mature rams have been seen. All in all, it was a pretty uneventful day sheep wise. Cut a ram track but that was it. I did find from fresh bear sign which was nice cause I have a tag for September on the same mountain. Also got into a lot of elk sign.
My buddy the rifle tag holder got up there with his family to camp over the weekend and was sending me pics of the ram and sheep that came back out right before dusk and hung out till the morning.
Opener is on Friday, my plan is to get up the mountain Thursday night to set up camp and head to bed in preparation for an early start Friday morning. Signal is spotty at camp so I’ll be in communication with my wife via inreach but likely won’t be on my phone much unless I’m high up on a ridge watching some sheep nap and have some time to kill. I’ve been able to plan for 22 days in the field for this tag which is honestly more than I thought I’d be able to get away with. I’ll be able to hunt this Fri thru Sunday, back out on Wed the 6th till Sun the 10th, that following weekend, and if I haven’t filled the tag yet, I’ll be out on the mountain from the 19th to the 31st.
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to focus on actual work these last few days and getting a good nights rest is proving to be difficult as I’m feeling like a kid the night before Christmas.
3 days till go time gents, looking forward to sharing more!

Thank you sir, I don’t consider writing a talent of mine but just wanted to get my thoughts down so I can revisit them in the future. My journal has become a mixture of observations, random thoughts, and recalling events and how they played out. This is allowing me to keep it more in a story format which I always loved reading other people’s hunts so why not share this one.

Thanks! For anyone who is well versed in sheep, what would you age that legal ram at in my prior post?

Edit. We can also play, ‘is that middle ram legal??’ 😂

Alright, packing the cooler now, everything else is in the truck and ready to go. Been feeling like a kid on Christmas Eve the last few nights, excited to get up on the mountain, set up camp, and go for a lil evening scout.
Planning on being up around 3a tomorrow to scarf some breakfast, have a coffee and a poop, then head out with plenty of time to find head to my glassing spot to locate a ram. If I’m able to put eyes on him, the plan is to follow as long as needed waiting for him to break away from the group (in my experience this could be in the first 5 minutes of light or first five hours, #sheepthings), try and make a stalk that makes sense. Not going to push too hard or force a situation, with it being opener I’ve got plenty of time.. been meditating daily on it trying to really reinforce the thought of letting it come together and not forcing a shot, even if I’m drawn back.
I feel as good as I can with the amount of preparation I’ve put in on the mountain, behind the glass, and shooting my bow..

It’s go time folks and I’m ready to work harder than a one legged man in an ass kickin contest
