Nah, just Ed Harris trying to portray John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Gene Hackman at the same time. Very poorly written or at least a dismal effort on Harris' part as far as I'm concerned.

The only thing authentic to me was the landscape and the 8 gauge!

It wasn't a real 8 bore, they sleeved a 12 bore to make it look like the larger gun and made up a dummy reciever for close up loading scenes.
