Anyone Use a Savage 99?

Have my Great Uncles made in1952,Model 99 in .300 Savage,passed down to my Dad,and now to me. Gonna give it to my Grandson this year for Deer hunting.

Has anyone shot 165 grain ammo for the 300 Savage? I’m thinking about trying this. I have factory ammo in 150 & 180 grain, but have never found 165 grain.

I loaded some 165 accubond's. My rifle didn't seam to care for any accubond really. Unless there's some there's some old old loaded stuff out there from years gone by. Double Tap and Choice Ammo is all that I'm aware of loaded with nything 165.

For any of y’all shooting a 99 in .250 Savage, are you able to get 100gr. projectiles (specifically the 100gr. Partition) to stabilize in the original 1:14 twist? Think the 99s went to a 1:10 in the 1960s.

I'm still looking for a Rem 700 classic or 760 pump in .300 Savage. Would be just as fast if not faster than a lever gun for a quick follow up. I didn't have the funds at the time but handled a model 81 woodsmaster in .300 Savage a few years back at Scheels. That would have been a fun one to grab. But they knew what they wanted for it and what it was worth.

I shot my first buck when I was 17 with a Remington 760 in .300 Sav. I sold the rifle to a farmer buddy when I needed a better rifle for work. He still uses it.

Two years ago my father’s best hunting buddy gave me his Savage 99 in .300 Sav. just before he passed. He bought it when he got back from the Korean War. A stack of ammo came with it. Some had boxes marked with tags of $5.50. With the peep sight I can shoot 1.5” groups. I plan on using it this fall to fill some damage tags.
