I've done a few pretty cool projects on my cnc the past few days. First, I was asked to make a sign for a hunting club. They wanted it to look like a national forest sign. I previously bought the font the forest service uses and added it to my design software, so I made them a sign from pvc board. I still need to fill in the letters with the proper yellow color and it'll be ready.

The other was a pretty detailed, lengthy 3d carve. I carved a section of mountain range and valley into a slab of sinker sweet gum. It took a little over 9 hours, but man it came out great.

I REALLY like the mountain range.
Had me thinking how cool it would be to have one of my local ranges as such.
There's a few sites out there that let you zoom in on an area and export the topographic relief as a grayscale image. The software interprets the image as a 3d image and carves based on that. It's pretty sweet. I built the awards for a local trail race. I carved the terrain relief of the trail into the trophy. eb8c9feb-ea82-400b-8e77-7144b92dad6e.jpg20260402_100449.jpg

Anyone have one big enough to do guitar bodies? I've thought about buying one but don't know if I want to deal with more noise and dust. I'm looking for someone to hire to try making a few bodies if I send my own blank. I've been using templates and it gets old.

What is the depth range of your router?
Most hobby routers like I own have a .75 to 1in depth of cut bits. I do have a 1.5in depth that i use for cutting boards. For finer detail type stuff the depth is usually .75in and shorter. I have some 1/16 and 1/32 diameter bits for detail work and their depth of cut is closer to .125in

Some folks do guitar bodies on hobby routers. The bed on mine can handle a cut around 36in deep and 32in wide.

Interested in doing a body if i come up with a file? I know some people only deal in 2 axis and sometimes it's almost faster to use a template on simple body styles
