Any Tips for Ptarmigan hunting in Colorado?

Going to try and get out after some Ptarmigan this week with the pup and wondered what kind of advice everyone has? I've never done it and am looking for some guidance and tips!

I have a hunting area already and know they're there it's just a matter of finding them. Thanks!

Get ready to put in some boot leather. I went out this weekend and found nada, we did around nine miles running ridges at 12,500ft.

First two weeks of the season I can pretty reliably find them but after about mid September they seem to just disappear. I've never seen them in the timber... would love to hear from a biologist about where to look for them in Late sept - mid Oct.
