My first rifle is a 788 in .308. Bought used in 1977 when I turned 12. Started hand loading for it when I was 14, and used it until I joined the Army when I was 19.
My Old Man started using it and fell in love with it. When I got out in 1989, I bought myself a new Ruger M77 in .30-06. The .308 was Dad’s until he went home in 2010. The last 1/4 century of his life.
I still hunt with it occasionally, just for old times sake. Been shooting 150 grain Hornady SSTs over H4350.
It’s got a couple sisters now. I added one in .243 for my Daughter in law to use. And found one in .22/250 at a flea market. 3500 FPS with 55 GMs pills over Hogdon 335.
Might give thought to upgrading it for deer.
Im though buing new rifles, at my aga. That is unless I find a 788 in .223 without breaking the bank.😎

The only one I’ve ever messed with belongs to a guy that I shoot with occasionally. He has a first year production 30-30 with one of the old Redfield wide views and it shoots very well. I’ve tried to get myself to the top of the list if he ever decides to part with that one

The 788 was designed to be a cheap alternative to the 700, but the happy accident was its odd rear locking lugs, heavy-ish barrel, and overall design created what is generally considered to be one of the most accurate factory rifle's ever produced. It might be a bit ugly, but "ugly is as ugly does." I sorta like its looks - belongs in a gun rack on the back window of a 77' GMC pickup!

I bought a 788 in .223 Remington from a guy on this site a few years ago. Its a great rifle and incrediable accurare with 62 grain bullets.

Mine is chambered in .222 Remington. One hole rifle if I was a one hole shooter. I wanted to do the Cooper rifle shoot with it but they wouldn't let me because it isn't a Cooper. mtmuley
