Alaska Highway washed out near Yukon south border

Yikes, glad I didn’t run into that issue when I drove the AlCan. Surprised to see that many vehicles piled up. Guess it’s more popular in the summer.

I'm driving down in October after my Alaska duck season ends due to freezeup,
then hoping to enjoy another MT hunting season until mid January.

We were stationed at Ladd Air Force base/ Ft wainwright until the mid sixties. 1961 or 1962 we were driving to America on the Al Can. I was 6 or 7 Found a washed out bridge and a bunch of people standing around. Dad put on his uniform, he was a Captain then, started barking orders. Mom started going rig to rig gathering groceries, set up a field kitchen. Couple days later traffic was moving over a log corduroy culvert. Alaska was so cool then!

Wife said they got it open already. That was quick. Must not of had any Engineer's helping.
Now open to single-lane traffic at Contact Creek as a detour has been created.
A pilot vehicle will guide drivers through a single lane.
Watch for the detour at km 900 for southbound traffic leaving from Watson Lake and
km 897 for northbound traffic leaving from Fort Nelson BC.
