Does anyone have any info or thoughts about a mt goat hunt in 13a of the absorkas. I currently have 7 points. I would like to hunt next year 2026. I'm guessing I have to draw the tag 1st then book the outfitter. Or can outfitters get you a tag. How many points do you usually need to draw a tag? And any outfitter suggestions?

I’m confused. There is no 13a in Montana and in Wyoming there are no points for goats.
Where are you talking about?

Quite a few goat units in Montana’s Absarokas. I’m assuming you’re talking about 323 or 330 or 329. At any rate, there are no over-the-counter mtn goat opportunities in Montana. No outfitter tags that clients can buy. You gotta draw it. Odds are tough. I’m sitting at 21 points, and my draw odds as a nonresident are somewhere around 3% (roughly) in those units.

Wow, ok. That's kinda what I figured.
Can these hunts be done by horseback to get ya relatively close or is it all hiking?

So my question is.. assuming I need 25 or so points to draw this tag, and just turning 57 years old, is this hunt a reality at age 70. Or should I buy a pretty picture of a goat for my wall and invest my point money on a different hunt?

Nothing is guaranteed. Your odds of drawing in the next 13 years are not good since your current odds of drawing sit at less than 0.5% at your point level (assuming you’re a nonresident). If you really want to go mountain goat hunting, look to guided Alaska and Canada options.

I'd say save up and go on a guided hunt in BC or AK. You can go any year you can save the money and success rates are pretty solid over all if youre in good shape. I saved up and went to BC a few years back bc I knew my odds of drawing any goat tag at any point weren't great. It was an awesome hunt and worth the money.

Ok so I've been kicking your thoughts around and doing some looking for goat hunts in Alaska or BC. Some prices look similar. I even think the hunt may be a little easier then the Absorkas because of the lower elevation in Alaska doesn't seem like you'd get altitude sickness. So I've got my spirits renewed. I had pretty much written my goat hunt off. Do you guys have any suggestions on a place to start, a good guide at a decent price that I don't have to sell my house to do this hunt?

It definitely won't be easier. There aren't easier mountain goat hunts, haha. I hunted with Beaverfoot Outfitters in Golden BC and I'm glad I did. It was great a great hunt with a lot of goats and I also killed a nice high country muley up beside the goats. With that said, some of the coastal hunts in Alaska look absolutely amazing. Big goats in gnarly country with shaggy hides late season. You also need to decide if you want to hunt them in september or later in the year. Both have perks.

All comes down to what you can spend. My budget was tighter and when I went a 10 day hunt in BC was more affordable so that helped make my decision.
