Trying to fit in as many September fishing days as I can. S and I decided to fish one of our favorite lakes on Friiday. Hitched up the boat, loaded gear and dog , launched the boat by 9 am. Pretty nice day, a little raw on the water, but everything looked promising. šŸ™„
Tough morning, the trout were not on script as we motored around trying different spots, switching fly techniques. Wind picked up some, but the sun poked out. By mid afternoon I was getting a little desperate to get my wife in to fish. Decided to fish a particular bay, using a sinking line and a bead head jig. Whamo, started catching fish. Decent rainbows started crushing the fly. I had a feeling it could be a brief window so we stayed determined. This bay had small groups of fish eating ducks, kinda fun to watch them diving and coming up with a meal. Our female GWP was pretty locked in .
Casually three hen ducks decided to check us out. They were about 25 yards out, and made a slow loop around the anchored boat. Stevie was intensely watching , sitting like a good girl. At this point my wife took a break from fishing and was having a good Ole time watching our dog quiver over the nearby birds. I was fishing away, with my back turned, but DID spy my wife decide to take a picture of the dog and the birds in the same frame.
Imagine the following.
We had three rigged fly rods onboard, one in my hand, the other two laying side by side along the side of the boat.
Right when my wife was snapping a picture, one of those darn ducks quacked. Dog launched overboard, using the two rods as a springboard. Wife is panicking the dog is going to drown.🤣 i turn around and immediately see a broken rod. Might have screamed a cuss word. I go to yank the dog back in the boat. Then I absorb the carnage of multiple broken rod sections. Two rods.
Silence. No eye contact.šŸ˜†
I quietly gather up broken pieces, and exclaim " and we are done". Motor back to the launch.
Two rods. One of which is my current favorite rod, the other a rod I've had for 25 year, my most coveted. The rod with ju'ju. I told my wife i felt like crying. Started laughing like a madman, it was sickening but so absurd.
Might have been this morning my wife slightly suggested the dog only broke one rod, but she kneeled on the other trying to grab the dog in the lake.
I still love her, but a quack to remember .
And that was that.
Slight mourning for the last few days.image000000 (24).jpgimage000000 (23).jpgimage000000 (22).jpg20260911_125506.jpg

Looks like a great trip...thank you for sharing!

NOOOOOOOOOOO

Dang man… that’s rough. I’d say a good day at work beats THAT bad day of fishing… šŸ˜ž

Hope you can find another of same model (s) if that’s the route you’re gonna go… can never replace the juju 😪

At Least you, your wife and your pup can fish another day! šŸ»
