.270 or 30-06?

I have several 06’s and have killed a pile of deer with them but I’ll take a 270 any day. 130-150 grain bonded bullet (accubond, terminal ascent, scirocco, impact, north fork, take your pick) will do anything you need to in North America.

If I need something that actually slings bigger bullets I’d rather step up to my 35 whelen.

Both are good cartridges but I’m partial to the 270. A little milder recoil and a little flatter shooting.

The 30-06 has the benefit of a wider bullet selection and heavier bullets. If I lived in Alaska and hunted moose regularly with the chance of running into brown bear then I’d pick up a 30-06.

In my youth (1980's), I had and hunted with a Savage 110 in 30-06. After owning it for a few years, I invested in getting the barrel threaded and installing a muzzle brake.
Some of the best money I ever spent!
Hunting Maryland, the 165gr Nosler Ballistic Tip did an admirable job! 50 yards to 300+ yards, I found the deer right where I shot them.

Many friends of mine had 270s.
While they certainly aquitted themselves well with lots of deer meat, for some reason I just didn't care for it.
Not a darn thing wrong with it, just wasn't me.

Fast forward almost 40 years and I happen to find a Ruger 77 MKII stainless with the Zytel boat paddle stock in 270 Win at an unbeatable price.
Loaded up some 140gr NBT over RL22 and went hunting.
So far, not a bad rifle or cartridge!!
Have taken 3 deer with it so far. None making it past 10 yards.

If I were the OP and had the money, I'd go with the Tikka, hands down!

I’m a 30-06 fan. First rifle was a savage 110 30-06. Still got it 25 years later, still confident I could kill anything with it. You could find 30-06 ammo at a gas station hardware section.

30-06. IMO 270 is on the light side for elk and larger game. It can be done, it has been done, but I like the penetration that comes with a heavier slug.

Still use it? mtmuley
Yup. In fact I’m thinking of putting a fancy wood stock on it and a scope with a gold ring this year. Got lots of 168 Bergers and 165 accubonds loaded for it. Tried some 168 hammers but haven’t shot anything with em yet. Supposed to do a Cali pig hunt with family one of these days.

Mine likes the 166 HH. Remington 721. Gifted to me by my Grandfather 56 years ago. mtmuley

My first rifle, a Browning BBR in .06.
I was walking out of a pawnshop in '93, as a guy was walking in with this rifle.
He was pretty sad to pawn it. I bought it on the spot before he got fleeced.
Dont hunt with it much these days.20251213_115554.jpg

Ok, my last 2 builds were .270Win and 06. But neither one would be considered "Grandpas" version.

.270Win that was named .270 Thors Hammer by folks on LRH. Built on 700LA, trued, 27" SS Light Palma contour Preferred Barrel, 1:8tw, 5R, 0.290 freebore, Triggertech trigger, Magpul stock, Athlon 4.5x25x50. Shoots 156 HH at 3250, topped 3325. Extremely accurate, could state distances but someone will have butt hurt. Have ladders for new 141HBC and it might top 3500. The 141HHT tops 3400 so it just might do so.

Built 30-06 last year, build posted here. Another 700LA trued, 26" Sendero contour, 1:9tw, McGowen barrel, Serengeti bore rider reamer, 0.190 freebore, MDT field stock. Shoots 181HH 3150 and 199HH 2925. Extremely accurate.

Taking old std cartridges, removing the built in governors and you get fantastic performance. Love shooting them both!

Rebuilding Sendero 300WM to do same and can't wait to see results.

BTW, yes both shoot factory ammo fine. Have tried it.
