2026 hunt adventures, the next Ben series

Oldest shot the slug gun and shotgun with buckshot yesterday together ready for youth day today.

He went with my brother in law this morning but I was told he was a little too pokey and a buck jumped out 50 yards ahead of my brother in law and garland was just dilly dallying around behind him and couldn't shoot.

Out this afternoon at a spot a really nice buck showed up on camera last night. I'm on the front with Jonah and garland is in the back of the property with my brother in law. Will see what happens.

Well they walked to the ditch and tracks we were on and I lost sight of them. We waited and hoped they had turned and were walking toward us but alas they just crossed the tracks and got behind us. Didn't see them again until the last 15 minutes of shooting light and they were a hundred yards away.

Garland and his uncle didn't have much better luck and only saw two does. Found out that there was a different person hunting a few hundred yards down on the next property with his scent blowing all over where the deer normally are.

Brother in law just sent me a cell cam picture of one of the smaller bucks right where they were sitting. Maybe next time.

Well, my brother has not been doing good with treatments so haven't been able to go hunt but that's all good. Hoping to get him out there to hunt with my boys some more this season.

Black powder is in right now for deer and doves first season goes out Saturday so maybe I'll get the boys out for one more shoot until it comes back in.

Received my swan permit so I'll have that going later this year when they migrate down.

Helped my oldest brother today with his hunting property, he has had a rough last couple of weeks and couldn't hunt. Might take the two boys here next weekend when gun season opens.

Squirrel season open on Monday and I'm off for the holiday so maybe I'll take at least the oldest squirrel hunting with his .22 he bought earlier this year. A lot of home things that need to get done though before it starts getting cold and I have been working 11s last week and this coming week so time is hard to come by to get things done.

So plans changed some. I didn't know the youngest had his 1 year drs apt today in VA so the wife took him up there and did some shopping at the big stores while I had the other three. Did some housework in the morning to keep things going and then took all three out before lunch to look for a squirrel but not really expecting to see much that late in the morning.

Made sure the .22s were still sighted in and then off into the woods for a slow walk to see what would appear. Did not see a single squirrel but had a group (murder) of crows fly over so since Jonah had his .410 I got him set up with me and did some mouth calling and had two come right into the woods and land, but Jonah could not get settled on them before they spotted our orange hats and decided flying above the trees looking for that lost crow was a better idea.

Jonah said he didn't know I could make a crow call with my mouth so that made me feel good that he was impressed and satisfied with my abilities. It was funny as they were telling their mother this afternoon about it and then he started trying to crow himself, didn't do half bad.

They had fun finding a turtle and a shell void of its turtle innards, found some scrapes that were done this morning and discovering new to them spiders.
