We had drove to this particular trailhead the evening before and stayed in the horse trailer. Got up not to early on the next morning and had coffee and breakfast. As you can see from the previous post the sun was already up.
We had a camp spot picked out 5ish miles up the trail. Let's just say we did not make it that far. It was steeper and my back was not up to the task, however we found a very nice camp spot 4 miles in. We also found a group of elk bedded not far off the trail at about the 3.5 mile mark. We tied up the horse/goats and made the short stalk, we got to about 90 yards but they were just bedded over the crest of the hill, but I got my wife all setup in the prone and ready in case they offered a shot. But those finicky mountain winds did not stay true for very long and blew right down to them, they were gone in an instant. By this time it was pretty close to dark and we headed for that nice camp spot I had spotted before we went after those elk. The rest of the evening was spent setting camp up and cutting fire wood and melting snow (you know packing my Katadyn full of snow and letting it melt over night was the cat's meow btw!)
