2025 dove thread

Between the 4 of us sitting on a field in Union Co, Indiana we may have seen 25 total at this point with only a handful being in range. Just 2 on the lanyard for me.

Never good when the cold front comes through before the opener.

Not seing many here in Northern Nevada. I saw lots last month around the thistle and rye grass.

Saw some nice bucks for my hunt upcoming next week.

And some huns.

So there's a couple plusses there.

Took dog to some riverside country. It held doves over the summer, none this morning. 4 turkeys, 3 deer, a few ducks and geese. Dogs first trip out hunting since getting her back from trainer in Feb. We've done a lot of training and practice over the summer. She was great, sat in her place quietly the whole morning. Glad some folks were able to get on some birds.

NC opener today. Got invited to a buddies planted millet field. Doves didn't fly as good as we'd hoped and when they did I blew a few shots I should have hit. Ended up killing a couple but let my cousin's kids add them to their bag. Doves quit flying mid morning and we turned it into a clay shoot. All in a great time way to kick off hunting season with family and friends.

Ended up scrounging for 8 at my secret public spot. It's about an hour from home and I didn't know there had been a grass fire out there recently. I had little hope of anything showing up after I drove in this morning, but I made the best of it.

Last year I ran into a good size rattle snake out there. This year I saw this little guy (western black-headed snake) cruising by me and got a good picture before he went underground.

Took the pup out this morning. We went late to public IA dove fields, I hoped to arrive as other groups were leaving. First field was still a zoo, so we passed and drove on second that worked out about as planned. Action was slowing down by time we arrived but we wound up w five, including a couple really nice retrieves.

Shot pretty well...5 stand seems to be helping.
Dog retrieved well (she even got to flush a couple pheasants).
New custom-molded hearing pro works well.
About to crack a beer.

Good day.

Another public land opener in the memory books. Birds were really working the field east of us, sounded like a war zone, and we got their sloppy seconds. Kids had fun, I was treated to some jewelry, and my son killed his first birds with his great grandpa's 12 gauge Beretta. The guy who banded the bird stopped by while we were taking pics. He looked at the # and it was the 1st one he did this year. Couldn't ask for a better fall kickoff.
