2025 documenting hunts / another Ben series

It's unusual weather for us here and a first to be able to hunt deer with snow on the ground. Went with my oldest brother to a place he hunts since it is so cold for us, not my preferred way to hunt since we park the truck right next to the stand but it's the best choice with the weather.

Saw one deer early on down the logging road about 1300 yards away.

After a little while of me feeling cold I knew G had to be so we retreated to the truck and turned the heat on. Wouldn't you know it after about 15 minutes looked in the mirror and there is a spike on the path 75 yards behind us. Couldn't get out in time to get a shot off though.

After some fat Deborah cakes and summer sausage had to head back home. Super windy today so squirrel hunting will probably be a no go.

The stand my brother wanted us to hunt in we couldn't use since it needs repair work that he couldn't get to yet, but this is what showed up there right after we left the land, wish we could have sat there.

If all goes well then next week I'll be able to get some hunting done. Going to have the entire week off work, although I've been off since the 8th of October with this being the first week back to work.

Note to others, if your wife uses the fact that you get 12 weeks of paid parental leave during hunting season as a bargaining chip to have another kid just know that hunting will not be happening during that time off. It really wasn't a bargaining chip as we both wanted a 4th child but I did think I was going to have some time to take the older ones out during my time off.

But we also decided to start a cut flower farm this year to sell to florists and that has consumed all my extra time since she hasn't been able to help. That work should be done this week if the rain cooperates and then I'll be free of that until next year.

sitting in the truck with the oldest waiting to see if a 6 pointer will come out that my middle brother has been seeing here a lot. Doesn't feel like real hunting using the truck like this but it's windy and cold outside. So, also on my phone looking at Black Friday deals for boots and base layers for the kid.

So far just birds, eagles, Canada geese and an owl.

Well, my curse continues. My brother has been here multiple times and the deer run all around him about 25 minutes before shooting time.

Had two come out about 8 minutes before too late but at 330 yards. Then a doe came out at 130 yards at about 4 minutes but she stayed right on the edge of the swamp so didn't feel confident G could make a drop shot so she wouldn't make it to the swamp.

Might have time to take the middle child tomorrow.

Wet today but no homework so back out here. Brother sent me a video yesterday of the deer all out here for 30 minutes before shooting time, so hope it works out. Owl is back in the same spot as last time.

I'm reminded why I was never into deer hunting and preferred duck hunting, I'm cursed with deer. Didn't see a single one, which is why my brother sends me videos and pictures of them when he is out there to prove he is not lying when I go and see nothing, not that I don't believe him. Maybe one day we will get some venison.

I can definitely get frustrating some times.

If y'all read last years events and recall my cousin shooting a deer and us tracking it a long distance to only jump him out of his bed the following day, well he survived until this year. My middle brother spotted him in the same location my cousin shot him last year limping along.
2 days later he was killed by another fella about 5 miles away.

Bear season in my area goes out tomorrow, buddy texted me yesterday of one of the kids wanted to go today so got G out here in a stand close to where he got one last year.
