2016 Montana FWP Region 7 – Big Game Season Recap

I was looking in Region 7 for this years upcoming deer/elk hunt and ran across this Youtube video from one of the Biologist there. He talks about the recap and the big game forecast for 17/18. Enjoy

If only it was possible to subdivide the region so you could determine how many animals are taken out of areas where the herd may be doing better or poorer than other areas.

This is complete nonsense. Can someone explain to me how and where they are coming up with their numbers?

He stated where their numbers come from......winter aerial surveys for deer and elk and summer surveys for antelope. In addition, they do hunter surveys and check stations.

I still contend that you should go to WY, CO or Hawaii for better deer hunting.

The problem with the winter aerial surveys is that it is hard to determine the number of deer on public land during the season. Near where I live most of the best winter range is on public but during the season many of the deer that are wintering on public are in or near the private hay meadows. The public land deer herd could be going down hill and FWP will never know if the private land herd is increasing.
