From what I've seen and heard this year, i would say deer numbers are down around 50% where I live ( North Central part of the state). That might be a conservative estimate. It might be closer to around 75% down from the last few years. Last winter was tough on them, but habitat loss is our...
I agree with the comments about fresh cut bait. Where i use to fish them a lot (Red River, Manitoba) fresh caught goldeye cut into 2-3 inch chunks was hard to beat. also did really well most days with suckers cut into 2-3 inch chunks. I'd freeze the suckers that were caught earlier in the year...
Thank you for the responses. Chevyman181, I'll be using factory ammo. Hoping to practice up to 500 yards, but will probably limit hunting shots to 400 yards. Does anyone have experience with the 168 grain Berger Hybrid Hunter?
Hello,
I recently ordered a Seekins 7 mm mag. With the 1 in 8 barrel twist, does anyone have any recommendations for style/grain of bullet to try? It will be used for deer, antelope, and hopefully another elk or two at some point. Thank you.
Forgot to add that this will only be the start....we're now on a slippery slope of game management. Let's re-visit this thread in two years at the next legislative session to see what new bills are introduced. Perhaps over the counter rifle buck tags? If that's what the people want, why not?
As someone who has baited deer many times in the past and will continue to do so if legalized again in the unit I hunt, I did not support this bill. call me a hypocrite if you want I guess. I cannot get behind taking power away from the game and fish and letting the legislature make decisions...
oh boy....and it might not even stop at that. the chatter on some Facebook Groups makes it seem like lot's of people want to take all the power away from the game and fish to manage deer herds and turn it over to the legislature. i don't see how that could ever happen, but who know's.
about a half hour through watching the meeting on Youtube. not sure I'll make it much longer haha. Whatever his name is from UOA surely only wants to continue baiting for the sake of children, vets, and disabled hunters......I'm sure there's no other reason.....not. I'm not opposed to baiting...
i think we can all agree we don't need or want the state legisators in charge of the deer herd though. what a disaster that would be. all in all our game and fish does a good job managing the herd.
true. I guess the point I was trying to make is I don't think CWD is their only reason for wanting the baiting ban. I think it lines up nicely with them wanting a baiting ban for decades. I definitely might be reaching/over thinking it though.
I think they believe it's unethical. Which if that's their perspective, fine. Just tell us. just had a conversation with my dad the other day and he mentioned attending an advisory meeting years ago, before CWD was as prevalent. He couldn't remember the exact year, but it was over 20 years ago...
As a resident of ND who has baited deer most years for archery, I'm close to wanting a statewide ban. not for ethical or biological reasons, just to piss off all the whiners the baiting bans have created. I think the ND Game and Fish's reasoning for the bans is B.S, and CWD is their cover, but...
