...for just slowing down a bit or straddling ruts.
if your inquiry was about cosmetics, I would say do it, but function is a stretch in my opinion. It’s a lot of money to spend. I am a fan of tirechains, locking diffs, and good driving and a winch over height, and flashy offset oversized tires.
I just did the same thing yesterday :) here’s what I’m planning if it’s helpful:
- Debating sliding cover (this is the one i was looking at, two ffiends have them and they’re great: https://retrax.com/) with Thule towers (I need a fly rod carrier and a Cargo Box/Ski rack) versus a Leer or ARE...
...other maintenance and/or winterization is done and good to go.
Organize and pack any recovery gear you think you might need. Tow strap, tirechains, jumper cables, shovel, sleeping bag, water, food, crank weather radio, etc.
Research the area for grocery stores, mechanic/tire shop, and...
Thank y’all for all of the responses. I like the board idea for getting unstuck. I’m going to buy some chains regardless, as the ones that I have are for a different tire size for a vehicle that I no longer have. I’ve never used chains before.
I’m currently looking at 7, 21, 24, 18, 32, 113...
...in case I can't.
6. Are Pomoly hot tents any good? What other brands would you look at? Don't want to spend a fortune.
7. Will I need tirechains for my Sierra 2500HD? I just got new Toyo Open Country AT3s put on a month ago. I'm used to driving in snow. Don't want to go off-road with that...
I'm shopping for tires for my 2017 right now, man. Not sure where you daily drive, but you probably don't need E rated. I'm going to stick with an SL AT tire as most of my driving is done on highways and city streets, with potential for a bunch of snow, 7mo a year.
As far as chains go, stick...
Thanks all. Pretty much decided the plan. Will target fitting the tallest tires (and allow chains) without level/lift, but with front bumper and fender trimming. Thankfully recommended to a shop here in the Bitterroot Valley that sounds like they've got plenty of experience fender trimming to...
This is where I'm at right now. I had a 2015 and ran E rated Duratrac. Great tire, but as you can imagine adding 20lbs at each corner ate up MPG (~4 for me). Ride was fine, better than my work 1/2 tons.
I'm now driving a 2018 Taco and looking to ditch the Wrangler Kevlars (ok tire, 4 punctures...
Keep in mind you can install the Trailboss suspension on some Silverados. This would also be covered by whatever remaining warranty u have. You'd have to check and make sure ur truck is eligible.
I've had leveling kit on my Sierra (the kind that mounts under the strut) and it was definitely a...
Like N2, I have hunted with an outfitter at the end (Eagle Mountain Outfitters, I believe) in 2nd rifle season. Fortunate the year (2017) I hunted there was dry and didn't need chains, just the 4x4. Chains were in the truck bed just in case. I can't remember for sure how far up it was, maybe...
Ugh, Ya'll are muddying the waters for me .:) I had my mind made up. Thinking about losing 4 mpg over the life of a set of tires is causing a cost/benefit analysis of E rated tires in my situation.
Not sure if this is "fireside" worthy, but I am in need of tirechains for a tire size of 285/75r16. Is there a certain brand of tirechains to look for?
Tony
I have to echo everything Mthuntr just said. He's right on the money.
I just put a new set on my 19 Tacoma. Toyo Open Country IIIs in the OEM size.
too early to tell how much I like them yet but so far I have no complaints. My truck is a daily driver and only spends maybe 20 percent of its time...
I'm sure others will comment but I would recommend tirechains as a must for the road back to soap creek. When it's dry good tires and 4wd is enough, but when it's raining that top layer is slick we chained up all 4 to get in! I know some guys tried to get in without chains and had to be pulled...
...you take it out west, it likely will not be "new" after the trip. Depending on where you go and how adventurous you are, I would reccomend an extra gas can, a fully serviceable spare tire, a good jack, a set of tirechains, and a chainsaw. All the above have saved my butt in the past two years.
