I hunt for the same reasons as you and in addition, I like to learn a new area. To me, the best way to learn an area is to get out and about and I might as well have a tag in my pocket too. I am after a trophy, but if that doesn't work out, oh well, not the end of the world. If I don't get any...
Thanks for the link. That was a good read. Populations look ok but it is not too current. Hopefully there will be some elk around for me to find. Anybody else have any info?? We are less than a month away from the start of bow season. thanks
I drew a tag this year, and am not familiar with the area and thought I would see if I could get a little help to get me started. Any one got any starting points for me? thanks in advance. I plan on bowhunting first to help to learn the area and then return with the rifle if needed. I also have...
Looks like a super bear. Looks bigger than 6' to me.
Funny how in some posts everyone is doubting the size of someones animial and then others people think it is bigger than it acutally is. I guess a lot of it has to do with the camera angle and stuff, sometimes pictures are misleading.
Looks like a great bear.
Glad to see someone getting into them.
Still hoping a few are going to start hitting the baits. The cold weather and snow last week kind of shut us down.
I will be starting in a few weeks (april 15). Getting excited to get started. I have a buddy going for the first time this year. should be good to help share work and expenses.
thanks for the replys. I probably didn't make the best decision and now that I have the tag, I am kind of regretting it, but I picked 98 due to the fact that it is somewhat close to home (ogden, ut), I have spent time around fontenelle hunting sage grouse and antelope, and just like the area. I...
I drew a 98-1 elk tag and have no experience in the area and was hoping someone out there might be able to help me out. Could anyone help with some starting points to start scouting around this spring and summmer? Are most of the elk from the unit in the wilderness in the NE part of the unit? I...
No body else has any input?? WTF??? No problem. I read the ID regs, and it looks like you can't use a plastic barrel? Is this the way everyone else reads it too? Still interested if anyone has any good ideas. thanks
I am going to start using some 55 gallon barrels for baiting this year and was wondering if anybody has any great ways of setting one up? Do you get ones with the lid that comes off? Do you lock it closed? How big of a hole in the side? Do you just leave this hole open or weld some hanging chain...
Thanks for all the replies!
Just kidding. I know how everyone is about sharing info about spots. I ended up picking the Smokey Mtn unit and after 5 days spent in there, I got real lucky and shot a decent deer (funky little 5 by 4), found a set of elk sheds, and found a couple of elk but just...
I am going to chase elk and deer with my bow this year in central ID and thought I would ask for a little help/info.
Does anyone have any input as to which area a guy who has never been there might be able to get into some animals, Smokey Mtn (units 43 and 48) or Pioneer (units 36A, 49, and...
I shot my bear a month ago. I took it to a buddy of mine who finished skinning the head and paws, fleshed, and salted it. Yesterday I took it to Moyles tannery in Burley to get their taxidermy tan. I won't get it back from them for 3-6 months.
My question is this, Does anyone have a good...
I have posted a couple of other threads regarding my expeiences of hunting bears this year, and finally last thursday, after 4 separate 600 mile (round trip) drives to set bait, I was able to harvest my first Id bear. I sat a the bait for about an hour and had a black sow with a white patch on...

...tell, but something had been there. Re-set the baits. Came back this last weekend and both baits had been hit again, this time I could find bear s%*t and tracks at both. None of the tracks looked to be real big but we will see. I set up a trail camera at 1 of the baits so hopefully I will get...
