First youth hunting rifle?
.243 Tikka was my choice, no regrets. If truly deer or antelope only, I'd strongly consider a fast twist .223 for the short to medium range stand setup you describe.- Deleted member 16014

My 11 yo old is about 65 lbs. He shoots lights out with his .223. Tried the 7mm-08 with Hornady custom lite 120 g SST's as he has antelope and deer tags for this year. I think the noise from the 20" barrel is what threw him off. Have a 6.5 Grendel on the way in the Howa mini action. -

My neighbor use a 223 for deer and antelope every year. He pretty much fills his tag with his coyote gun when he is checking cows. He killed his goat at 380yrd a couple of years ago. I worked with a few guys that like using a 223 case necked up to 6mm with a 75gr bullet. I think it's plenty.- chevyman181

7mmRM is not "too much gun" with the right bullet. My S-I-L has taken several with TTSX bullets with minimal meat loss. I would say any modern cartridge with .243 dia. bullet or up that is designed for hunting should be just fine. .223 seems light, but I am sure many have been taken that way...- VikingsGuy

Beg to differ, In the right situations with the right bullets, the 223 works just fine for deer size game. My buddy had his 6 year old use my AR, with some handloaded 55 gr hornady spire points I had laying around to shoot his first deer last year. Lung shot, 40 yd run and a dead deer with 2... -

New rifle for deer
My freezer would disagree with you. I’ve shot a lot of deer, antelope and a handful of elk with a 243. Good bullets, and placement I’ve never had to “look for a while”.- Idahoarcheryhunter

How did you take up hunting?
I grew up 30 miles in the middle of nowhere on a natural gas plant where my dad worked. My parents were not hunters Or even had a gun to their name. Sorry yes I own a .223 Rem and see no reason to use it on Deer or Antelope when I have much better rifles for the task. A new build followed me home

If it still has the factory trigger it is probably one of these. Easy to tell; if the bolt is locked with the safety on then you have one of these. It's a nice feature.- antelopedundee
