The money isn't the issue. We just don't have the points to get a decent unit. It's fine. We will elk hunt next year and go for pronghorn in a couple years.
Thank you everyone! With what all I've heard I think it best to wait and build up a few more points. I've decided to take him on a cow elk hunt next year instead. I greatly appreciate everyone taking time to respond to my post.
I don't doubt that the pressure pushes them out of public pretty quickly. I suppose an outfitter is a possibility. I would like to find some private I could pay for access on, but that might not be possible.
I'm looking to take my son on his first western hunt next year. We will only have an average of 2 points, so I know my options are limited. Does anyone have any recommendations for which unit might have the best public access? Or perhaps how to go about finding private ground to get access to...
Colorado is the closest state to me with elk aside from Kentucky. I put in for KY every year, but my odds of getting drawn are very slim and getting slimmer every year.
I do most of my hunting alone for this exact reason. No one wants to go as hard as I do. I spent a week in the mountains of Virginia last fall trying to find a black bear. You want to talk about difficult! Lol. But I was out there morning, noon, and evening every day. I enjoy the grind. Most...
I have thought about it. I went last year on a semi guided cow hunt but that was mostly me getting driven around in the mountains and jumping out to take a shot.
This isn't a bad idea though. Possibly do a cow hunt in a unit that I'd like to bull hunt later. Get to know the area.
I can, and probably will bank a couple days this year for next. That might afford me a short trip out of to show up an extra few days early
At the moment I am. I'm trying to talk a couple buddies into going as well, but if I have to I will go solo.
I'm not making excuses. I put a ton of time into scouting and practicing with my weapons here. I get 2 weeks of vacation and 1 week is for the family. So if I take any time to even fly out to go scout it would considerably shorten any hunting that I would get to do. I'm not "talking about doing...
I have a bear hunt this fall, but I started buying points in Colorado this year. I thought I'd try to do a 0 point unit next year and buy another point. So hopefully I can cut my teeth on the otc/zero point hunts, then in a few years get to do a more premium hunt.
I love this piece of advise...
Hello everyone,
I'm sure this type of thing gets asked a lot, but here it goes. I am looking to start elk hunting. I'm not after a "trophy" bull. I just want a decent chance at success. I have been on one cow elk hunt in New Mexico, but it was more like me getting driven around in the...
I've only gotten to go elk hunting one time and that was for a cow. I was successful on my fourth day, but I had someone super familiar with the elk in the area with me.
Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone had any experience hunting bears in southwest Virginia? I will be staying in Gate City Nov. 11th through the 14th. As far as I've been able to find, the closest public ground is the Clinch Mountain WMA which is just under an hour and a half away from...
Bear hunting magazine podcasts by Clay Newcomb are a great source of information. But from what I've researched, look for mast crop and concentration of bear sign. Look for small breaks in thick cover.
