Thank you for saying this. I had this happen when I was hiking in to a deer spot as a late teen / young twentysomething. Things can be scary in the dark that might not be so serious seeming in the light of day. It's not a deep woods story but I was def scared in Idaho one year, tent camping with two buddies off the side of a dead end FS road. How far do you stay upwind of elk?
Hard to say but killed close (archery 11yards, and under 30) with consistent bad wind, had two like that that came in unabated. That said, no telling how many I spooked near and far, vast majority of encounters end that way it seems! -

I have seen some pretty dumb elk on occasion. Shot 1 or two (cows) that ignored my wind. -

So how does one explain when an elk or a deer comes within 30 yards, or closer, with wind swirling or in their face and they act like, "oh well". Pressured vs unpressured? Darwin award? Animals can be very inconsistent in their reaction to human scent I've found. -
Picking a CO unit
I don't see any need for a service. Data is all there and free from CO. Never count on a "fluke" draw from CO, but you might be one of the lucky ones at the final point level in a given year. The only mystery CO draw has left (until 2028, with a random element thrown in) is how many more points... -

Almost time for a 2026 thread.... Idaho NR app period is already approaching for some in a couple weeks. Dang I am bored, my Sept elk hunt seems eons ago. My freezers are full and I have no room for a whitetail, so maybe I'll hunt a little in December, or maybe not. But I can't wait for next elk...- Bullshot

Understood. I painted with too broad a brush there and know its a hard fight that some take on to the benefit of all. I get the rugged individualism and all but I am continually surprised that western states law enforcement and/or the fed govt do seem so much weaker on some issues there than they do east of the Mississippi. Wide open spaces must dilute the ability to project power, and some lone individuals...- Bullshot
