Not the hugest mulie ever, but a good meat-buck (our freezers are empty). About 230yds, quartering away with a .284 Win. 150gn Nosler Accubond, always seems to do the trick.
My .284 Win seems to love VV150 with F210 primers. I have several very accurate hunting loads with this powder/primer combo using different bullets. Granted, these are lighter weight bullets for deer-size critters, mostly. In the 140gn range, but yes, my experience has been very positive using...
Building a 280 AI off a T3X action. I'm using an X-Caliber carbon fiber wrapped barrel, which is the diameter of a varmint barrel. Probably a CTR stock would also work with some modifications. If you have one in your closet, I might be interested in buying it for a reasonable price.
I recently built a .308 on a Savage 110 Ultralite receiver. My goal with this rifle is to be a well-rounded, LIGHT WEIGHT, mountain rifle. So far, it fits that purpose. But I had an oldish factory stock leaning in the corner I used, just because it weighs practically nothing and... there it was...
I do this in my Savage 110s and Tikka, but not my Remington 700s. In my -06 (a Rem700) it actually doesn't take much before I'm jamming the bullet into the lands. There's just a lot more room in the internal mag of a 700 than there is in a detachable mag of the others.
Yeah, sorry that took so long. With 140gn Accubonds I'm consistently getting about .75 MOA with charge weight of 46.8gn. Average MV is 2813fps. Not sure how far off the lands I am, but my COL measured with a comparator from base-to-ogive (BTO in my notes) is 2.378".
Hornady Interbonds have been...
My .284 is not picky, but I've used 140gn Accubonds, and 139gn Hornady Interbonds and Interlocks (BTSP). All were sub-MOA with the Interbonds being the best (I'm still pissy that Hornady discontinued them). As far as charge weight and such, I'll have to check my notes. I'm out of town at present.
Another thing to remember is a turkey's eyesight is every bit as keen as an elks nose. If you moved toward him at 200yds, it's not inconceivable that he might have seen some movement through the brush that made him nervous.
As far as calling goes, as a general rule of thumb, you want to sound...
I built a .284 a few years ago. It rapidly became my favorite hunting rifle. The 2 best powders I've found are VV N150 and RL15. Varget isn't bad. N150 is spectacular with bullets in the 140gn range and RL15 for 150gn pills. You'll hear people talk about IMR4350, but I've never gotten better...
If hiking in to a glassing knob with my rifle strapped to my backpack, I don't have a round chambered. Once I get to the glassing knob or a place I'm going to drop anchor and hunt from, I chamber a round and top off the magazine.
Basically, if my hands are on the rifle, I'm in active control of...
I guess I'm actually a little skeptical about this. The Time Mag article I read this morning seemed to indicate there was a good deal of secrecy about where the wolves are and I don't think this has been independently verified by any scientists that don't work for Colossal. But still, pretty...
