Spotting Scope or Telescope to view game?

Here's my situation and application. I have a ranch surrounded by National Forest, and 13,000 ft. mountain 5 miles from my home. We see Elk and Deer regularly just looking out the window with binoculars. However I'd like to reach out further than with 8 power binoculars and view game...

    Sleeping pad suggestions?

I thought I'd risk trying out a 4" air mattress that you pump up with either your foot or palm of hand. I've used it 3 times an really like it. I like it that I can inflate it in about 90 seconds, if not over inflated, it's very comfy, doesn't leak the air out, when you pull the plug, it...

    Fear of Lost Keys

I often hide my truck keys behind the front bumper of my truck. There's areas there where they are pretty secure and won't fall to the ground. I do it mostly when I'm in a fun run and don't want to have keys in a small pocket of running shorts.

    Hunting Camp/Wall Tent Questions

I pack into the backcountry, as I have horses and mules. I used to have a quality canvas wall tent that was 14 x 17 feet. It was huge in both set up size, but more importantly, huge and super heavy rolled up. So much so, it was hard to pack in. I didn't have an internal frame, as that would...

How much do elk wander in December

Sort of depends on where you're at. I live in a Wintering grounds and when the backcountry gets deeper snows and cold, the Elk come down and bed down about a mile away at most. Then, I see them comed down at dusk and graze in an irrigated meadow. Around 7am, they file back to their bedding...

    game bags vs pillow cases

I'll probably get some flak for my response here, but it's not going to change my mind. For game bags, I put my meat in garbage bags. If I was hunting in warm weather I wouldn't, but when it's cold and especially when there's snow on the ground, I use them. Here's why. Garbage bags take...

Colorado GMu 81 Road & Trail Conditions

T As for the Adams Fork area I was in, I don't believe that is actually a designated wilderness area, but an electric chain saw with a 6" bar chain isn't going to shock my conscience much for being in a wilderness area anyway. As for the USFS using motorcycles to access trails to cut trees, I...

Colorado GMu 81 Road & Trail Conditions

I just got back from a pack trip into the Adams Fork drainage in the South San Juan Wilderness, which is Unit 81. The majority of people heading into this wilderness will be coming in there on Forest Rd. 250. I entered on the Northeastern route, which is where FR250 starts from State Hwy. 15...

Looking for Local Colorado Archery Partner - 2023

If you haven't found a viable option, you're welcome to get in touch with me. Why? I suppose because I enjoy helping others, and one of my passions in life is using my Horse, Mules, and Burros for backcountry use packing. I retired to building my 49 acre ranch that's surrounded on 3 sides by...

    1st Rifle Elk Colorado question

As for your comment about the Bull Elk rut, and them going into seclusion, I have my own thoughts on the timing or duration of the Elk rut. Here in Southern Colorado, I hear Bulls bugling in mid October when the 1st rifle season's on. They may shut up, due to knowing hunters are out and about...

    Burro?

I have Horses, Mules, and two formerly wild, BLM Burros. Here's the thing about Burros (spanish for Donkey). The standard size are hardy and tough enough to pack with. Historically, they've been beasts of burden all down through history, and can carry quite a bit. They do walk slower...

    Hunt Talker 2023 Fitness Goals

Here's how I stay in shape, not only for Elk hunting, but for doing about everything I enjoy doing. I participate in "Western Pack Burro Racing", where we run alongside our Burros for long distances, (one race is 29 miles), at high altitudes, (up to 13, 185 ft on Mosquito Pass in two of the...

Ute Indian Tribe says "No Wolves in our area"

Just read a news article where the Southern Ute Indian tribe sent CPW a letter saying that they don't want any Wolves released in the area they have some legal jurisdiction over. That area is a huge chunk of land in S.W. Colorado, and the tribal rights emanate from the 1874 Brunet Agreement...

Does anybody really regulate outfitters on USFS lands?

Put me down for being amongst the folks here that are NOT impressed with both the USFS and BLM. In my area, there is an Outfitter with 2 fully guided camps and 2 drop camps fairly close together. This Outfitter is a total slob. If you visit his camps in the off season, you'll find a plethora...

Colorado Rifle Deer Season for "Above Timberline Only"

As the author of this thread, I'm getting some nice feedback. As for those that suggest the "Above Timberline" might mean the hunt boundary is in a Wilderness area, that doesn't seem to align with the Above Timberline definition. Some trailheads in the West side of the Sangres have...
