Look at Hollis Adventure Rentals. A truck and a skiff would be the most fun if you have some boat savvy. Plenty of places to launch on the road system.- Calvin

Make it a 120" Typical Sitka Blacktail for me, out of velvet. -
POW options
Any mountain on POW has bucks in the alpine region in Sept. Sometimes the aren't right on top, but often in bowls and on the fringe that time of the year. Glass is important as they lose that orange tint in Sept. The north end would be good, but keep in mind they've closed a ton of roads on...- Calvin

Kodiak vs. POW...which one?
You are looking at two completely different experiences with Kodiak and POW. The only thing the same is the deer. Sitka's are native on POW, and grow rather big there. Big ones on Kodiak too though. But, POW is a rainforest and weather can suck beyond belief. POW gets a lot of pressure too...- Calvin

The Narrows Inn is probably your best bet if looking for not ghetto, but cheaper than the Best Western. Best Western is the easiest though. Right across the street from the ferry.- Calvin

CO Question
I'm going to give CO elk a shot next fall. Can anybody point me in the right direction for finding a map with trailheads on public land, and where the trails go? Also, would it make any sense to rent a $19.95 a day u-haul cargo van, and use that as my base camp? Or do the roads get crazy... -

If you are serious about fishing, do yourself a favor and say away from the cruise ship charters. Come up for a 3 or 4 day trip, and then you can see what we really have to offer.- Calvin

Not sure where you are getting your info. Here's the deal on SE AK charters. Limits this year are a bit tougher for kings. After July 1st, 2 kings annual limit, non-res. 1 after July 15th. Coho limits stay the same at 6. For charter, the halibut limit is 1 per day, over 68" or under...- Calvin

Hate pit bulls myself. Some of the biggest puzzies in the world have pit bulls, to make up for who they are. I'll shoot all pit bulls on sight if they come on my property. Every drug dealing loser in my area has a pit bull.- Calvin

AK deer hunt ideas
Hard to say "Trophy hunting" and Sitka (the town) in the same sentence. Baranof has some decent bucks, but I can't recall a book buck ever coming off of Baranof,expecially close to Sitka. (used to live there) Beautiful place, but trophy hunting takes place on Kodiak and Prince of Wales... -

haha, yeah, I see amazon.com ads, as well as shutterfly. Two sites my wife frequents and recently made purchases from. I have been suckered in by those ads though. I was looking at snowshoes on backcountry.com. For the next week I saw those dang snowshoes on just about every website I went...- Calvin
