Does anyone have any pheasants reports from the Winner SD area ? I am concerned w the drought & early crop harvest. Any reports would be appreciated. I am planning on hunting thanksgiving weekend, but will plan a different trip if the reports are poor.

I actually talked to an outfitter from that area just yesterday and he said they had one of the better hatches of the last 10 years. I don't think you can go wrong in SD anyways, cuz even if they have a supposed "bad hatch" they plant a bazillion birds anyway.

Only the preserves and outfitters "release" birds. Us OYO guys hunt what mother nature gives us. Winner had a good hatch and there are birds all over that area. Good luck!

spook, if it really matters, the first ring-necked pheasants were released near Redfield, SD 102 years ago. The rest is history.

Good to know. You would be surprised at the number of people who think they are native.

Not sure if they are still around but doesn't a ''Conservation'' Org exist to make sure that this non-native stays on the landscape.Always seemed strange to me.

Pheasants Forever is the one you are thinking of. There is millions of $ to be made from pheasant hunting, in SD pheasants are as valuable as elk are to CO. Non-native or not, there will always be birds in SD.
