The biggest I have pics of.

Have a pic somewhere of a 150ish my dad shot during the rut behind our house. We had hunted in the snow for a week and my dad declared he was done. We came home for early dinner and pop was pushing me to play cribbage. I had just got out of the shower and saw it cruise by the back window. I threw on a pair of sweats and rubber boots to take pop out after it. He replied that he said he was done and he meant it. My mother busted his chops about the money he had spent on a NR tag. SWMBO.

Took pop 100 yards behind the house and there was a buck nose down on a doe trail. Pop tipped it over and we gutted it and drug it back to the house. I am actually pretty sure that it was not the same buck I had seen out the window. The pictures of that buck are "lost" because I was only wearing nylon sweat pants and an ASAT sweater. My wife said my junk was clearly visible in every pic. 🤣

I know this thread isn't about back stories but since I'm couching it...
That other buck i posted scored 152. It was the first morning of a three day hunt on a BMA. I watched him at first light make his way in to 200 yds. I almost didnt shoot him, thinking I have time to find a better buck.😆 glad i did, that would have been bonehead decision of the century for me.
This buck( second best) scored 146. No good field pictures for a reason. Drove 5 hours through terrible winter storm. Arrived at camp spot to shovel two feet of snow, temps at -20, tent poles imploded. Slept in two sleeping bags, still cold. Water froze, camp stove froze. Got up and trudged off in to the timber without breakfast. Cut tracks and stalked this buck with does. Snowing. Caught up with him at 20 yards, gun over shoulder. When he raised his head to rake a branch in one motion swung the gun and shot him. It was so effing cold, I hardly bothered for pics. Rancher shook his head, " can't believe you slept in a broken tent in that weather last night".20250820_191310.jpg

The stories are the entire point to me. The animals I have that break the most tape I don’t consider my best. They were both lucky right place right time for my biggest

I grew up in whitetail country (Louisiana) and never got one, focused mostly on ducks. After moving out West I started getting into big game and it's been a fun ride . About 20 years ago I switched my focus from mule deer to whitetails, almost entirely archery hunting public land in Colorado. Steep learning curve but in about 10 years I shot 4 bucks and a doe. This is the best one, around 145. Sort of got the bug out of my system so this one is almost certainly the best one I'll ever shoot.
