I have a 25 year old polaris sportsman 500

It has great 10+ year old? Aggressive tires made by Kings

Tires look fine to me and the ATV is always been stored, covered in an open air carport

I just got to thinking the other day when I was riding some rough ass trails while scouting it might be a case where I should replace the tires even though they haven’t given me any trouble because of age?

What do the HT experts suggest? How do I know when to replace the tires before they leave me in a lurch?

also, what’s your best options for a small dog basket strapped onto an ATV

Run em.
Unless they are starting to show signs of aging (cracks, dry rot) or there’s enough tread, I wouldn’t replace them unless I had to.

My sportsman 500ho is 20 years old and still running factory tires but only about 1200 miles on the machine.

Ditto what everyone has said on the tires. I've run some way longer than 10 years with no issues. I always replace when the tread is so worn they start to lose traction or when there are so many plugs in them I start to get where I don't trust them anymore.

No idea on the dog bucket. Maybe a milk crate?

Last time I replaced tires the first real issues I was seeing were related to stopping distance and skidding/sliding on hills

OK, the expert committee has spoken! Thanks for the advice.

Now I really need to suck it up and sell while it runs well and find a great shape replacement ATV that is 15 years younger before the rest of the 20 year old parts on this one it leave me in a lurch.

Pioneer 520 or pioneer 500

Honda Foreman for manual, Yamaha for automatic.

Many are moving to UTVs. The ones that fit in the back of your truck are Honda and Kawasaki.

Not to hijack this thread but what do you guys recommend for replacement tires? Would be for a machine that isn't used a whole lot so they don't need to be anything great.

Enter your sizes in Amazon, sort by price and hit the buy button. I don't think any ATV tire is better than the next. I have been buying them for 30 years.

Simple tire and Priority tire both have good selection and decent prices. I've been running Sedona Ripsaws and wouldn't change if the others were free. We have a couple Fourtrax 450's that have been running the same set of tires for maybe 8-10 years and still look like new. One thing I really like is that they are non-directional.
