What are you currently reading?

No power or cell signal last night and today due to wind damage, so I picked this up and read it for the first time in 30 years.

I read three short stories: “The Heathen”, “Lost Face”, and “A Piece of Steak”, and damn if Jack London wasn’t great.

To build a fire is one of the all-time best.

Mountain Man: John Colter, The Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the call of the American West

It is excellent!!!

Not outdoor oriented, but finishing the last book in the trilogy which begins with The Brotherhood of the Rose by Dave Morrell. Very different take on spy tradecraft spanning generations.

Just wrapping this one up. Kind of interesting read on one of the most famous names in ornithology. Nice to see someone write a real book about the guy, warts and all. And all the drama of early colonial natural history kind of cracks me up.

Next up:

I’m not confident I’ll make it through this one, but I’ll give it a whirl.

I like this author because he doesn’t bash any specific diets, but he encourages you to add fiber to your diet. He also discusses lifestyle factors like sleep, stress, etc that impact your health more than I realized. I was shocked when I was diagnosed with colon cancer several months ago. I was training for a marathon at the time, and had spent the past 17 years on hotshot crews and other fire crews. I could out run and out hike almost everybody that I worked with. I struggled to figure out why it happened to me, and even my oncologist told me that I’m not the type of person they usually treat. After getting halfway through this book it is clear to me that the combination of stress, sleep deprivation, and alcohol consumption put me at high risk. Also, even though I included vegetables daily in my diet it was nowhere near enough.

I enjoy reading this. There is good info all though some is outdated. Its interesting to read and then compare to where things are at now. My favorite part of the book is that the float trip I do is not in it! lol
