any of you idaho boys know what kind of snowfall they had this year, and how much of it is left in the pierce area? think thats the closest place to where I'll be hunting in may. leave kamiah and head back east into the "ant hills on steroids". think the place we stay is the weitas creek ranger station?

Is "lots" an answer? Sitting here in Pocatello you can make it about 1/2 mile out of town (up the hills) and you will be into the snow. N. Idaho received record amounts of snow this year. I wouldn't be counting on an early spring.

Nice country around Pierce. Lots of crazy (ex)loggers around last time I was there.

IDHunters, thanks. not exactly what I wanted to hear, but facts are facts. have the trip scheduled for the 4th thru the 10th. head back down the hill on the 11th. hope the road is clear enough to get part way up the mountain in the vehicles before we switch to the "tracked" vehicles.

N. Idaho snow pack is something like 200% of average. I don't know if the weather service considers the Clearwater area "N. Idaho", but it would at least be on the edge of the high moisture area. We received 5 inches of new snow on Sunday in Pocatello.

Good luck to ya!

IDHunters, is drowshak(?) an area? seems to me I remember hearing that area for some reason. and its probably good that idaho got the snowfall they did, but not really a good thing for the time I'll be bear hunting. but hopefully won't make a difference. bringing bacon scent and shellfish scent. have had people swear by this stuff, so we'll see.

Dworshak is, I believe a hunting area but it is also the large reservoir by Orofino. It the N. Fork of the Clearwater.

Sound like LILIDAHO is dialed in to your spot.

IDHunters, orofino sounds familar. and looked thru the thing lilidaho put up. as long as its gone, or at least most of it by may 1st, I'll be happy. hunt starts on the 4th. and you are right, dworshak is a hunting area, but know I have heard that before. and last year, we crossed over 9 feet of snow going into the camp area. think its the weitas creek ranger station? thanks for the updates guys.

Orofino is 25 miles down river from Kamiah. What unit are you going to be hunting in? I will not all be gone by May first but should melt some. It snowed up in that area tonight. Good luck. That area is "Home" most of the summer! LIL

You are staying at Weitas Guard Station I'm positive. Its on the upper parts of Weitas Creek. Will definitely be snow, the three nearest NRCS snotel sites are showing 148, 148, and 90 inches of snow.

TheTone, sounds right. thought it was a ranger station, but whatever its called, know weitas creek is right there running by it. last year, we were dropped off and picked up by the outfitter who took us over the snow still there by a rhino with tracks and a 6 wheeler with tracks on it. by the time we got closer to the guard/ranger station, there was no snow and it was in the upper 60's-lower 70's all week. does it make it easier for you to figure out where it is if I tell you we passed a pretty fancy outhouse building along the road on the way up? that was where the snow was the deepest. they said it was 9 feet at that point. just looked at the outfitters site, and they do their early hunts out of the weitas creek guard station. thanks Tone.

LILIDAHO, looked and didn't see what unit that is. also tried to find last years license. that ain't happening. so maybe knowing its the weitas guard station might help you? and any time you guys want to give me GOOD news about the snow pack, feel free.....:D:D:D

thanks for keeping me informed guys. appreciate it.

TLC,

Just incase your guide croaks on you, you may want to pack a GPS and lock in the coordinates back to your truck! Just saying.

I live about 50 miles due east of where your talking about. Fair amount of snow still around for this time of the year on this side of the hill. Good luck with the hunt.

BHR, the wife will have one with her, so covered there. hope it starts warming up soon. hate to think I've wasted the money on this hunt. especially since I'm bringing the boy this time around. boy = 25 years old. if its as good as last year, will be very happy.

got any snow melting out there yet? leave in 29 days for the idaho hunt, and got my application in for the lottery for the minnesota hunt in september. life is good.:D

I was at track meet today. It snowed, sleeted and the sun shinned. I don't think much snow's melting up high. I was told that this past weekend that an additional 12" fell.

went to the site that someone posted for me above, and the snow at shanhai summit has dropped 3 inches. not getting my hopes up for anything good coming soon. all I can do is hope the valleys are OK where the outfitter hunts. and that the bears are out and moving. think I may bring a few more warm weather clothes this year.

BHR, you 50 miles from pierce? or kamiah? if you don't want to answer in the open forum, thats OK with me. I understand.

think the last time I went to wunderground, they said the temps in pierce would be in the 50's by the end of the week? will keep checking there too.

I'll let you know first hand at the beginning of May...

I'm taking a little walk along the Continental Divide and spending a couple weeks or so on the quest... :)

EC, be heading out that way on the 1st, and heading back on the 12th. you gonna be around for a cup of coffee on the return trip? boy leaves from lewiston on the 12th, so the wife and I will be thru there that same day I'm guessing.

I should be back from my walk by then...

I'm assuming (55 miles as the crow flies), around hills and gullies, 70-90 miles...

Shed hunting, survival practice, new experiences...

Yep...

Should be back... :)

Sent my #...

Russ... :)
