Water Purification

Ive used the Sawyer squeeze mini but filling the bags can be a pain. Sometimes a pump is better for getting water from a small stream...used a msr Sweetwater and it was good, then had msr miniworks ex on my last trip and that sucked bc I forgot a brillo pad and I didn't have a good way to clean the filter and it was ridiculously slow. I have tabs as emergency backup.

Gravity filter at basecamp.

Usually hunt with a group so as long as we have a couple technologies on hand we've got it covered.

I use the Katadyn filters attached to a hydrapak and then I squeeze the water into a 1.5L water bottle. It is a simple and quick solution. I have tried other systems such as grayl, uv pen, etc but so far I am most pleased with the simplicity and efficiency of the Katadyn system.

I've had many filters over the last 40 years, five years ago I bought the MSR Guardian and it's the best filter I've had by a wide margin. The Guardian is a fast pumper and is self cleaning on each pump, I've never had a problem with if plugging or slowing down in turbid water. It also filters down to .02 microns so it supposedly is good for virus's if you're worried about that kind of thing. There is no charcoal filter so it won't remove chemicals or odors which I don't worry about. Having no charcoal filter also give the filter a longer life. The downsides are it is very expensive at $400 (on sale at REI right now for $299) and it is larger and heavier than most so it's not for the ultralight crowd. Weight is 1.45 pounds. It might be more suitable for groups but I carry it everywhere.

Ketadyn base camp and a lifestraw. I believe my ketadyn is the 10L variant which does a good job. Never had any issues with either.
