Had the opporutnity to check another country off my hunting bucket list this past week, and spent a great week in Sonora chasing Mule Deer........ Yeah my job is pretty cool.... LOL.

While not a physically challenging hunt.... it wasn't easy. Countless hours in the high rack and still hunting the aroyos in 80+ degree Temps made it tough. And you have to be on high alert at all times because the deer are nearly impossible to spot and dissappear super quick. Rarely did a deer hang arround to even get a shot at...let alone judge. I didn't even see a deer until my 3rd day and there were several deerless days experience among our party of 4 hunters.

I got lucky when at high noon a buck and two does blew across one of the main roads while on our way in for a Siesta. We tracked them into an arroyo but never caught up.... but lucked into the buck I killed bedded under a tree in the shade.

It was a tough year it seems, as last year the outfitter said they killed 11 over 200" and I think they only had one that big this year. Overall success rates were way down and everyone we talked to at the airport in Hermisillo seemed to have the same story.

7 days is a grind when it comes to this type of hunting but with the chance of a truly giant buck areound the next corner...it somehow remained exciting till the end.

We ended up going 2 for 4 hunters but both were smaller than what the outfitter would normally like to see killed. That said, I killed my best buck and definitely appreciated the opportunity.

That's a very good buck that anyone would be proud of. Good on you for making the opportunity pay by working hard.

Mind if I ask who you hunted with?

Headed down next January. PM me if you'd rather not say on the thread.

Thanks for any info and that's a heckuva nice deer, congrats!

Went with Top Shelf Outfitters.... Joe Surpenant. Good outfit, and would definitely recomend, but was apparently a tough year. Hopefully the big ones were just hiding and they will be out doing rutty Mule Deer things for you in January.

Nice buck...is that your rifle?
That is the new Sig Cross Magnum in .300 WM. Sig was paying for the trip, and that is our newest and greatest so that is what we used. It is a great setup for precision shooting, but after experiencing this hunt first hand, I would defintely recommend something lighter and quick handling, as all the shot opporutnites were very fast, and always inside 200 yards. That big gun was definitely overkill for this situation, but we fired exactly 2 shots out of them and brought home 2 deer, so they obviously did the job.

Thanks, enjoyed the recap, as usual with your stuff.
