Ukraine / Russia

Today's United States military is a well oiled machine, unlike the former Soviet Union military. I am grateful to all the men and women that choose to enlist.
The brag was in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse being under the impression that recruitment was up due to everyone thinking how great he is.

Thats not the case, at all.

Nobody is questioning the sincerity, the jobs they do, or the abilities of those in the military as you seem to imply.

You don't think Biden's disastrous withdrawal in Afghanistan had anything to do with Russia's invasion in Ukraine and lower enthusiasm in our military during his term? A fresh new approach to recruitment, played a big part in the increased numbers of recruits. I think your CNN goggles are clouding your vision a little.

Do you think recruitment will suffer a little if the DSA gains power, Buzz? Looks like they are taking out the Democrat party right in front of our eyes. Do you support this movement?

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) adopted a radical political and economic platform. It calls for free housing, healthcare, and education, abolishing the U.S. Senate and replacing the presidency and Supreme Court with bodies controlled by Congress, cutting police budgets toward zero, and a working-class foreign policy. The detailed planks of their agenda include:Thriving Working-Class CommunitiesFree Services: Completely free, government-funded childcare, pre-K, and public higher education.Housing: Universal rent control and a commitment to expanding social housing and housing for all.Criminal Justice: Complete abolition of the carceral state. This includes shrinking police budgets annually to zero, demilitarizing law enforcement, and ending the criminalization of working-class survival. An Economy for the Working ClassLabor Rights: Building robust union power and implementing a standard 32-hour workweek.Wealth Redistribution: Heavy taxation on the wealthy to fund a Green New Deal and public expansion.Healthcare: Universal Medicare for All.Working-Class Foreign & Democratic PolicyForeign Policy: Ending the U.S. war machine, ceasing economic warfare, and calling for a free Palestine and a reduction in the Department of War.Electoral Reform: Universal suffrage, a representative Congress based strictly on the popular vote, and structural shifts that transfer executive and judicial power to Congress.

You should probably stop paying attention to this stuff. Add it to the list of fake things that will never happen.

You can find an example of someone who wants anything. Not worth finding stuff you hate to stress out about ;)

No stress from me over this. Democrat party is shitting their pants right now however.

Surely there are all kinds of reasons for people to join the military.

It can be sense of duty, family legacy, GI bill, 20 year retirement, being given a choice by a judge...and certainly who is CIC. As well as a host of other reasons and combinations of same.

But, to ignore things like high unemployment, high inflation, recession, companies cutting jobs for say, I dont know AI...well, thats just flat ignoring facts.

Claiming the increases in recruitment are because you happen to be CIC is the height of arrogance and denying reality.

A serious CIC with humility would look at the situation and try to understand why. That's what great leaders do...and that wont be part of the critical thought process in this case.

All of that is absolutely in no way a reflection of why people choose to enlist, their abilities, etc.

They make choices in regard to their own circumstances and I support their choices.

To get back on track with Ukraine/Russia, which by all counts of the current administration should have been solved about 1.5 years ago.

Ukraine is having a field day on Russian refineries.

Having spent many years working in a refinery, this strikes as a game changer. The damage takes months to fully repair, and is vulnerable to another attack, putting them back at square one, again.

I don't think this is how Putin thought it would go.

When this thread was started I don't think any of us expected it to still be going 4+ years later. It really seems to be a combination of how poorly equipped and trained the Russian military really was and how innovative the Ukrainian's have shown themselves to be.

It truly is sad the amazing loss of lives that has happened on both sides. Hard to believe that the Russians have been so accepting of as many as a million of their young men being killed or wounded.

Still not sure where this is going to end up. Both sides are still stuck very firmly on their ideals and not seeming to be willing to give an inch on a compromise.

If someone invaded the U.S. would you compromise?

I dont compromise or negotiate with terrorists...and I'm glad Ukraine feels the same.

I think it ends with Putin taking one to the back of the head by his own side. The problem with being a absolute dictator/supreme leader is the moment you show weakness you're done and we ain't talking retirement. Putin has no interest in compromise because compromising and losing end the same for him. His only option is to win which seems extremely unlikely. And I don't blame the Ukranians for not being willing to compromise. Doubt I would if I was in their shoes.

“That’s a damn good platform” - T. Roosevelt

Seriously BH the fact that you aren’t in favor of 90% of that is a testament to how far from center the Rs have gotten.

“Thriving working class communities”

The horror

They tried a bunch of this shit in the former Solviet Union and now they are getting their ass kicked by one of their satellite countries. It never works in real life.

Socialism and communism have been conflated as interchangeable in our country for longer than the 75 years I've been around. When I was young, it was viewed kinda like the war on drugs. That is if you take one tiny step, the slippery slope will take you to the bottom, meaning communism.

They are not the same, and imo, democratic socialism is more a northern European approach than a Soviet approach. I do not see evidence that there are proposals for the government to seize private enterprise, into governmental ownership. While there must be some one out there wanting that, it is very fringe. It will not appeal to most.

Ronald Reagan campaigned against the creation of medicare. He stated it would lead to the loss of individual liberty. We are sixty years past his prediction. My life experience has not been defined by losing my liberty.

I think that this rise in democratic socialism is a reaction to the conditions now quite common. For a good while, when I was still working, I felt that I was at the lower edge of the portion of society that could pull ahead, over a span of time. I made good money, working in an oil refinery. The company offered generous benefits. It was not difficult to put away money for a future retirement, yada, yada. For a person making $10/hr less than what I was earning, it would have been much more difficult to both live a middle class lifestyle, and save for a comfortable retirement.

We have had a k shaped economy for most of my adult life. The upper 15 to 20 % has prospered quite well. The remaining portion of society, never really gets ahead. The frustrations of this portion of society is largely responsible for the political situation, today.

Do you think nominating a guy with a nazi tattoo on his chest is a smart move for your party? Do you think having these people in the house of representatives is a smart idea. Playing footsie with anti Semitic communists is great way to make your party irrelevant for the next 20 plus years. You choose your direction.
