Turkeys

I just went trough my feather collection from many past turkeys and found the beard off the first turkey I ever shot back in 2015. I remember thinking that it was the most amazing thing and in my recollection it was as long as any other beard on a turkey that I have shot since, but it was only 4.75" I don't currently have a display for turkeys that don't have full fans, but I am thinking about coming up with something.

I also pulled the turkey feet out from the freezer from my tom last Spring. I want to include the spurs with the beard. I had shot up the fan so that will have to go on the display with the little beard once I get that set up.

I also have some trad arrows that need to be re-fletched and I am going to start working on converting some of the many, many wing feathers I've collected. Hopefully next week I will have another turkey to pull feathers from. Hope you are all having a good start to your season.

Out in the woods now. Called in a pair earlier that I could never get a shot at. I was down in the woods and they were in the open. They didn’t want to venture down into the timber. Had a deer run through being chased by a coyote at my first set up. The coyote immediately turned and ran over my decoy.

Camera I had put on one of my public spots blew up with birds. Over the weekend there were 2 dozen hunters on camera. Zero birds. Today multiple hens, no less than 4 males. Showed my wife the pic while making dinner. She said go now. Drove to the spot, no trucks at trailhead. Walked in at 5, left with bird at 5:45. Looks like I’m tagged out until another state opener coming up very soon.

My 6yo got her first bird Saturday (4/11) I might have spoiled her. We got into the blind at 548 she shot him at 608. 3 toms flew into the field landed 30yds from the blind. Strutted in to 15yds gobbled at 20 and she made a great shot.

Another public mountain bird from WNC.
Struck him at 8:50 and he was dead by 9. About 6.5mi from the truck.

Old SBE and copper plated lead at 20 yards.

20# bird. “Chick-fil-A” style turkey nuggets coming right up. View attachment 406271View attachment 406272
Great bird and gun!! You really put in the work for that one. I shoot the same gun, inherited from my grandpa so means a lot.

What choke you using? Im shooting regular #6 steel (CA no lead) and its coming out of a carlson ported cremator long range full choke for waterfowl. I already had it for waterfowl and their turkey choke has pellet size restrictions where this one does not. With the SBE I am very confident letting it reach. Also have the carlson rifled choke for when I shoot slugs out of it for deer hunting.

The boy and I doubled this AM. He smoked one and his buddy hung around long enough for me to grab the .410 and rack another round in. Also, my Dad was there with us. Core memory stuff right there guys!!

I can’t upload videos so I put it on here to show you all.

This is by far the largest bearded hen I’ve ever seen. It’s pretty cool.

Season opens here on Monday and birds are all over the place. I’ve got one in particular that I’d like to go after opening day because he looks like a big double beard. He seems like the king of the farm.

Pics of randoms:
Top pic is the double.
