Has anyone been out for bears or turkey in western Montana? I hunted one day on a bma along the Bitterroot and only called in other hunters. Planning to hunt by Thompson Falls this weekend and see if I can locate some turkeys or bears. Has anyone seen any bear activity yet in region 1 or 2? Do bears feed throughout the day or mostly at night? I've only hunted them one other time in mid 90s by Eureka. Seems like a lot of snow, but this weekend it melted a lot. Good luck.

I saw a decent bear my first night out in the blackfoot, and have heard of a few getting killed in the Missoula area already. It's early, but they're out.

I had a strutted up turkey attacking my tire as I was trying to get to work this morning, they're fired up now for sure.

I killed a jake up Ninemile on opening morning. They were still reluctant to come to the call then but it should be a lot better now.

Randy - you don't need a turkey permit, but a State of Montana roadkill permit.:)

I got rained out yesterday and took a short drive off the reservation and for my first time in 19 years I went spring bear hunting. I was glassing a group of elk and spotted a dark black bear below the elk. The bear was double my rifle range and even at a slow walk he covered the ground quickly. About two of the 30-40 elk spotted the bear and let the bear walk within about 100 yards. The bear was traveling to a new area and didn't stop for 1/3 mile I watched him. The elk watched the area the bear traveled for quite a while. So they are moving.

Keep us updated!!! Im headed to Thompsen falls in about 2 weeks for bear and turkeys, and to visit my brother. Hope he doesn't mind me huntin while he is at work and hopefully he will have to help me pack a bear out after he is off!
