Hey guys and gals, my wife and I just purchased 10 acres near Bull Lake outside of Troy, MT and maybe moving there once our place is built - so I am wondering if I can get some intel on hunting elk in that area for a 70 year old young man. No honey holes, just general insights. Appreciate the help and assistance.

Average hunt days per harvest for elk is roughly 320 days per harvest based on the MT FWP data and check station data. But good hunting for deer, turkeys, bears

Yes without being difficult.. you’re about 40 years too late in that country. I don’t think it was ever ideal elk hunting but it was a lot better than it is now, due to a combination of habitat changes, climate conditions, predators, and karma.

Thanks, have all three on the property - have not seen an elk in the 10 days we were there. So where are the elk, I am assuming up high?

There aren’t very many elk in that part of the state. A lot of guys who live there go to other parts of the state to elk hunt.

that's funny when we were in Idaho panhandle saw a bunch, guess they wont cross state lines...lol

You are correct. I worked on a project right west of Troy into Idaho a few days a month last year and thete were higher amounts of elk sign over there. That was from Bonners Ferry to BC. Probably due to not hunting them for 13 weeks a year like Montana.
