Hey all, looking to plan a WY antelope hunt this year but instead of doing an Air BnB I thought it might be cool to rent a travel trailer and do some camping. We're flying from Tampa FL so we'll have to rent a truck but I was wondering if anyone has done anything like this? Renting a truck is easy, renting a travel trailer is easy, the difficulty comes from being able to plan on the ability/allowance to tow with said rental truck. Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks in advance.

There are places that rent camping equipment. That might be easier unless you are familiar with RVs.

I'd reach out to the people renting the travel trailer and find out what their requirements are and make sure the truck meets those requirements. Also, you'll need a draw bar and maybe weight distribution hitch, so ask the trailer rental place about those as well. Finally, ask if the rental trailer comes with everything you need to hookup, dump etc and will it be good to go for the temperatures you expect.

I looked into this a few years ago. The real issue was vehicle insurance. My insurvance was void if I tried to tow a travel trailer with a rental vehicle. An RV might be a better way to go or maybe your insurance wil still cover you.

Yeah the truck seems to be the real issue here, more than anything that they ALLOW you to tow. We've rented some trucks from the normal rental companies that are plenty capable. I've considered a normal RV but then we'll be limited to hard road conditions. I appreciate the input, I'll keep looking and we'll see what I can come up with.

I've looked into it, most places you can rent from strictly forbid towing even if the truck has a hitch.
A couple of years ago when I hit a deer, I had a month with a rental truck. Entire month of June. They said no towing and I said yeah okay and put my receiver in the hitch in the parking lot before driving home to get the boat!

I ended up swapping it with a different rental place that allowed it. Why the hell would they rent a truck if I can't tow?!

I rented an airbnb in Rawlins for $50/night, turned the fridge down as cold as it would go, butchered and vac sealed the Pronghorn on the kitchen table, then froze it all in the fridge before I came home. The only trailer I'd tow is one I have history with, learned my lesson, twice.

Towing on i25 or i80 during the fall in wyoming is not for the faint of heart, might have 6" of snow and 70 mph winds in short order. A half ton with much of a bumper pull at all is something i wouldnt reccomend, though a stabilizing hitch might help... id use a lot of caution and make sure your insurance is good to say the least.

Being from Florida and doing it, bring extra underwear. No offense...
