I noticed her limping around the house one day and asked her what the problem was. She said she was up all night doing laps on the M and did 21 of them, that’s 17k of vertical took her all night.

My wife has gotten into ultra runs, she’s ok, but some of the people she runs with are definitely annoying. We went to the Grand Canyon last spring so they could do the Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim run, which is like 47 miles and 11,000' gain and they all trained like crazy for months. I drove the whole 10 hours there, and while they did their thing I cold turkey-ed the 19 mile round trip hike down to Phantom Ranch on Kaibab trail to have a lemonade and back up the Bright Angel trail, AND shuttled the vehicle and had cold beers waiting for everybody at the end of their run. I also met and talked to Chris Denham (from Western Hunter) and his wife on the way down, he was the only other guy wearing a camo shirt so I figured I should meet him, nice guy, I had a great time. Oh, and I drove the whole 10 hours home too so the ultra folks could nurse their foot wounds and sleep it off. None of the runners were impressed though! Whatever…

Grand Canyon is an amazing place...have done that same hike a couple of times.

How did she do it? Between the male domination, her responsibilities at home, and even tho we have come a long way as a society the strong stigma that woman can't do ultras is still lingering in many circles of society today in 2025.
Joking aside, did she struggle to get into the ultra marathon world? Honest question because i feel like im probably missing something here.
And that hike is awesome!

She was never a distance runner but is stubborn as hell and was a college soccer player so she knows how to put her head down and get to work, she did a program that was 1 mile every day, then 2 miles every two days, 3 miles every three days, etc., up to one year, but she found the longer 10-12 day breaks at the end of that year were too long so she mixed in short runs between. She also tries to run with friends and accountability makes a big difference. Now middle-distance is her norm, she's on a 12-mile run as I type this. She's done maybe a 1/2 dozen official runs now, between 30K and 50 miles, and always finishes top 1/3 or so.

It's certainly changed in the last 6 years. I noticed a change after "A River Runs Through It" came out in 92', and then after 9/11 too.

Here's a pic of my dad taken in 1949 sitting on top of a P51 that was parked on the green at MSU after the war. Not sure what the look on his face means, but he was a 20 year old student, so no telling lol. He's now 96, and I was talking to him the other day about Bozeman. He said, "I always knew it was going to get discovered, I'm just surprised it took this long." Compared to 1949, Bozeman was ruined in 1989. And of course, compared to 1919, it was ruined in 1949. Life marches on and nothing stays the same. It's still one of the greatest little communities in the USA.

Similarly, a proposed large dense subdivision with a big golf course west of Gateway (fortunately was denied), but we had put place up for sale and planned to move to lots owned near Boot Hill in Virginia City. I had even had a septic system built and had drawn a design our home. Then suddenly (it seemed) we had four grandkids close to us. Wife said no way we're moving!

Same here! The kids even mention that they “might” move here and my wife locks down any opportunity of getting out of the valley. She was born and raised here. I really don’t blame her but I am over a lot of the garbage that has come with this current out of control growth path!

I think I may have something that might convince her though . Have an opportunity to buy several hundred acres and have 3 homes on the property. Get the heck out of here AND have the kids on the property….that could be fun!

It’s a long shot, we’ll see .
