The Eberhart Experiment

they can smell your breath.

until you put on an oxygen tank with your scent suit that doesn't work anyway you're being fleeced
Why would a 70 year old guy with 60 P&Y bucks from some of the most pressured deer herds in the US want to attribute some of his success to a ridiculous scent suit?

Edit: to add I think it’s more likely than not I’m being fleeced. Maybe the clothing will at least be quiet and useful bowhunting outers

Please share pics of this experiment

Been Archery and gun hunting whitetail for 35 years.

A story to share:

I used to be a scent free nazi.....I mean strict adherence to procedure kind of guy.

One evening 25 years ago, I put on all of my scent free gear, got on my rubber boots I kept in my tote of leaves behind my garage, I sprayed down, snuck through the woods, walked up a creek 125 yards in 5"of water....I got out of the creek and took 5 steps to my tree. I watched 2 hours later as a mature doe followed my trail. It then walked the creek smelling the water, then got out where I did and followed me right to my tree and looked up at me.

I knew right then, that I was hunting an animal that truly was next level intelligent.
No animal that I have ever hunted in north America compares to a heavily pressured whitetail. None.

You will NEVER beat their nose.

Eberhart.....well.....he spends a LOT of time in a tree. Anyone who does that will have shots eventually. Especially if your are high in a tree in a bedding area (one of his favorite tactics).
What'd you spray on your boots that day? I'll bet i know the answer already.

Carbon or no carbon, the sharpest thing in the world will cut through your pants without making a hole....and still smell.
Maybe incorporate a fasting and colin cleanse before every sit?

The thing about activated carbon is that the actual temp required to regenerate would melt the clothing. An electric dryer simply doesn’t get hot enough to be of any effect. I will say that Scentlok makes some very nice garments though. Scent Blocker did as well.

Yea last time I used my dryer I dont think it was running at 1500F°

I have NEVER sprayed anything on my boots. Back then I kept them in a plastic tote with dirt and leaves in the bottom of it. They were knee high rubber boots with my pants tucked inside of the boots. I actually wondered if somehow that rubber was lying down a scent.

That c u next Tuesday tracked me right down to my tree.

I remember doing some silly things with my hunting clothes like storing them in big plastic bags, throwing dirt and fresh cut branches in the bag at camp and also spraying them down with lots of scent killer spray. Anymore about the only things I do are wash them without detergent, store them in a separate tote, don’t cook in them and using lots of wind checker.

I’m curious how he knows he hasn’t been busted in years. Clearly he wouldn’t have any clue about deer that he never saw and may have smelled him

I think it was based off hearing them blow. Before scent control he would and after he didn’t. I feel like I’m coming off like I’m kind of defending the guy but I’m just trying to relay the information I heard. Generally the comments are skeptical and consider me a skeptic as well. Of note, when he tried scentlok, he said he was a skeptic as well and was hoping for just maybe a decrease in his scentings not full on ignoring the wind which is where he says he is at now. Wild mind blowing stuff for me and why I think it’s worth a minimal investment to form my own opinion if there is anything to it

Interesting thread! I don’t know who Eberhart is, but I’ll share my experience at the risk of being ridiculed😂 I am a closet Scentlok user.
I was in the ‘play the wind’ camp for a long time and still am when possible of course. I’ve hunted a certain river bottom with some buddies for years now. We bow hunt early season when the deer are still on their summer patterns.
I started hunting a new spot close to the river a few years ago and what happens here is there might be a decent prevailing wind all afternoon but that last half hr to an hr before dark it often just dies to nothing and the thermals are literally going everywhere.
Anyway, I came across some Scentlok stuff on sale and bought the early season stuff as I kind of wanted a dedicated whitetail setup. Later that year I started getting trail cam pics of a giant buck and that fall I borrowed a friend’s Ozonics and kind of went all in with the scent control stuff. I never did get the buck, but I did confirm at least to myself that either the Scentlok or the Ozonics, or the combination works at least to a certain extent! I have since picked up my own Ozonics unit when it was on sale.
In my experience it won’t totally keep deer from smelling me, but I’ve had them downwind multiple times and have never had one blow out totally spooked. What usually happens is they stomp around a bit sniffing the air and occasional blowing but more times than not they will keep moving and calm down after a bit.
So ultimately to me it’s worth using it in this very specific case.

This is a pretty high deer density area. To me it’s not necessarily about keeping the oldest smartest buck from smelling me but if I can keep the 10 young and dumb ones that come out first from smelling me and alerting him then it’s worth it! Also it might help that I’m usually hunting here the first week in September and the deer really haven’t been pressured yet.
